Never had this problem. I have 2 d500. I never take the cards out. In camera format all the time. Initially I insert the cards as described here, very carefully.

Google "recover deleted files from SD card" Also, many card manufacturers offer free recovery applications (SanDisk is one that I have used). Whatever you do, don't use the card again until you try and use the recovery application. Good Luck!

Welcome to the forum. Good advice from Machinedoc. Good Luck

I download my card(s) to the drives for storage. Then reuse the card(s).
I am not sure why you would not want to download the files then reuse the card(s).
After downloading the files to the drives I format the card in my camera so it is ready to use again.

I agree. Download to your drives.

Maybe more than you want to spend but the Nikkor 105 mm micro is a great lens.

Welcome to the Hog! If you have a good local camera shop go and check out their selections. A good roller bag or backpack might be for you. I have a Tamrac back pack that holds two d300's, a couple of lens and my 80-400 with no problems.

Take the 24-105 for general shooting and get the 100-400 for wildlife, you won't miss the F2.8 at all. A nice 16-50 kit lens would be nice for wide scenics but the 24 will be wide enough for most of what you will see.

Having spent a bit of time in YNP I have to agree with MT Shooter. I would also consider a TC for the extra reach. Enjoy your trip.
