This is my first post.I have tried numerous bags to carry my NikonD4S with a 200-400 f4 lens and found all too tight lengthwise.Any suggestions
There are dozens of great photo bag manufacturers and its a matter of doing the research and finding one YOU like, not what others like. To point you in a direction, I personally like Peak Design products (look at their 5L and 10L shoulder bags), Manfrotto, and Think Tank Photo. All make great products in various shapes and sizes to fit almost any need.
Narrowing it down from a backpack style or a roller bag might give a better direction for us to help you.

Or a messenger bag.
Thaz great. You can shove the body end
of the kit into it, and then put a padded
sock on the lens thaz hanging out of it !
Always ready for anything that happens.

I use the Lowepro 200 AW Shoulder Bag.
https://www.lowepro.com/us-en/catalogsearch/result/?q=200+aw I've used this style for many years. I prefer shoulder bags over backpacks because you can get to things easier (from the top) than with a backpack.
Welcome to the Hog! If you have a good local camera shop go and check out their selections. A good roller bag or backpack might be for you. I have a Tamrac back pack that holds two d300's, a couple of lens and my 80-400 with no problems.
You do not give an actual measurement of the length you require so it is a bit difficult to judge. That said, due to an increasing amount of equipment I was dragging around I found myself in need of a larger bag; since I am always using my "accountant brain" to evaluate between cost, quality, and utility I arrived at the Amazon Basics bag (
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CF5OGP8/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1). This bag has an interior height of 16.5" which is more than sufficient for my purposes and I have found its construction to be excellent. At a price tag of $31.84 it will not be beat.
You have raised a very interesting isssue. The reality is that there are many bags that will accommodate our camera "kit" including lenses and accessories, and there are many configurations which provide various methods (and ease) of access. I have learned the hard way that the best way to do this is bring your gear, or whatever you intend to carry, to a local camera store and try out their stock. Where I live we are fortunate to have a great camera store, where knowledgeable staff can help you narrow down the choices right at the start. Depending upon the importance of this choice to you, you might call ahead and consider driving to one, even if it is not as close as you would like. Just a suggestion. JimR
Try taking you equipment to a store and see what fits and what's comfortable.
Take a look at something that does not scream photo equipment and draw the thief's attention. Common messenger bags, pistol range bags, etc. And a heck of a lot less expensive.
