I usually sharpen the subject (bird) and not the background and rely more so on Clarity and Structure tools than Sharpen tool. For the background I turn Clarity and Structure down.

For now this works for me but there are other ways to do it as well. Processing possibilities are nearly endless and I am only beginning to scratch the surface. My main obstacle is lack of patience.

I agree. My main obstacle is patience also but I have an excuse. I’ll be 71 tomorrow and I’m running out of daylight ;)

Nice pic!
Could you discuss how you use the tools on only the subject and not the background? I assume you are using layers?? Thanks!

I already know. I'll be 81 in another 3 weeks, and have a terminal illness, called "Old Fartitis".

I'm using Capture One Pro for Sony and yes it is layers. You can add, subtract, copy layers or partial layers very easily and make adjustments by layers. I could not do it justice by trying to describe it here. Its an awesome program but takes a bit of learning. I gave up my subscription to Adobe after using it for a short while. I'm not that good yet but learning. Suggest you google Capture One 12 tutorials.

I started with a free version available for Sony cameras that has many of the complete version features including layers. Many cameras are supported on the complete version...not sure if there are other free versions.
