Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking any of the Nikon Models, even the RED ones... The less expensive prosumer cameras are wonderful tools that only a few short years ago would have been thought to be impossable to produce. But that is not my point. Nikon should not let we, who enjoy and have gotten use to a pro body camera hanging to swining in the wind waiting for a D400 without any way of finding out if the rumers are true or not... These rumers must have some basis in fact, and keeping mute about them is a disservice to us loyal Nikon users who would like to plan our next purchase, especially those of us who have made a sizeable investment in quality DX glass. Furthermore, there is at least one Professional Photographers association which REQUIRES that you own at least one PRO Camera body as a condition of membership...

Sounds more like the Hell's Angels than a Photographers' association. The Angels require ownership of a Harley Davidson as a condition of membership

Nikon keeps on releasing new prosumer cameras, RED cameras, and $1700 lenses that allow you to shoot in the dark... Well I've decided that untill Nikon comes out with a new PRO-BODY DX model, I'm going to keep my money in my pocket, refine my skills snd keep shooting with my most excellent D300s !
Hey Nikon, Put that in your pipe and SMOKE IT !

I couldn't agree with you more. Seems Nikon is on a bad downward spiral. Nothing really new, nothing cutting edge! It is a real disappointment. Seems to me that Nikon is trying to capture those that really just want to use their smartphones to be photographers.

I said exactly this in previous comments.

There was a time when manufacturers like Nikon brought out a new camera "occasionally", eg when the F was replaced by the F2, now I accept that technology moves on, but, when they started adding in camera filters, editing, special effects, all great for kids (sorry, toys) I stopped looking at new releases.

I use a camera I don't need to play with it or boast that I have the latest, which the D7000s are not.

The camera manufactures are in trouble! There is a mass migration of the general populace to phone based cameras and instant sharing. The majority of people will never print beyond 4x6 or 5x7, perhaps an occasional 8x10.

I feel confident that they are looking for a sweet spot to keep the cash flow going and to, perhaps, entice a few of the phone users to switch to a real camera. To do so they feel that they need to offer all the "bells and whistles".

I understand their dilemma. They are caught in an area where technology is truly disruptive. I just hope they can all survive.

My $0.02

I have used a Nikon D200 for a couple years and recently bought a D300. The D300 certainly holds it own. Excellent and most capable camera. Coming out with a new model every 6 months is crazy. All they seem to do is add a couple features or move/add a button. Essentially the new model is 95% of what the old model was. Just like the D300 vs D300s. Don't get me wrong, nothing wrong with the D300s but no worth an upgrade over the D300 IMHO. No cutting edge technologies. I will stick with my great Nikon D300 which is weather sealed and built like a tank.

Well guys, I found most of the post interesting and I agreed with them except for that one ignorant negative remark.

Any way I plan to not up grade unless I get some real, real improvements. I could care less about all the additional photo settings and having video. I only want auto and manual settings.

As for the red body, it's nice to have two different colored bodies when in the field so I don't have to loose time changing lens.

I heard that the d5300 comes with a brown (?) body. However it has no improvements for what I want over the d5200. I don't like or need the d5300's GPS. There's enough government tracking.

So I'll stick with my plans to buy the d5200 in bronze to go with my red d3100 and my black d90. Each will have a different mm lens mounted. I'll have a ball in the field in the dirt and possibly dusty environments, minimizing dirt getting on my sensors because of not needing to change lens. When will the d5200 price drops :?: ;-)

By the way, it's not the camera that get's good shots. It's the person behind the camera, the human being, the thinker. Thanks to my film SLR experiences, I also get good shots with my point and shoot. Sometimes it's faster, speed wise and ISO, than my DSLR.

After purchasing the d5200, I'll probably look at purchasing a bridge with a long zoom for when I get tired of carrying three DSLR's

Thanks guys and gals for your inputs. Have a great day

That sounds like a great idea. I can fit my D5200 Red with a tele and my black Canon with a wide angle and be set to go. thank you so much for the idea. And bronze, that does sound nice.

I couldn't agree more, but perhaps (in my paranoia) I take it a step or two beyond. DSLR cameras simply cost too much, and considering the coming economic crash, coupled with increasing hostility from our government toward individual effort and success, and the incitement of class warfare; discretionary buying of overpriced luxury items suffers. Those of us who can afford heavy discretionary spending appear to be more interested in finding homes with fireproof walls and tile roofs. I believe all of this will happen in the immediate future unless we can get tough like Canada did a few years ago when facing a similar crisis, but this is very doubtful.

Cameras, like most other techno/electronic products, contain a minimum of raw materials. Most of their parts are mass produced on computer-controlled, automatic machinery. What labor is involved is provided mostly by the third world at what amounts to slave wages without benefits. A relatively small number of scientists and technicians are involved. Planned obsolescence, and a big sales/promotional force probably account for a major portion of production costs. Distribution and warranty costs probably are moderate.

In short, I believe the only reason our beloved cameras cost so much is because the manufacturers can get away with it. I love my Nikons as much as others love their Canons, Sonys, Fujis, etc.; but until responsible government returns and prices come down to reflect reasonable profit levels, I will buy as little as possible.

The saddest part of this is that I suspect we have gone too far across the board politically and the result will be inevitable.

Right! Then you get an Op/Tech Double sling.

Do you really need a colored camera to tell which one is the tele and which one is wide ? Then I guess, you'll need a an assistant to remind you whih lens is on the red camera and which one is on the non red camera...
