Upgrading from dx to fx is a $$$ challenge, no question but with the new cameras like the D800 I just do not see what you folks are gripping about. I waited over a year to move from a D300 to a D800e. I wonder why now.

My $$$ challenge was not painful because I already had lenses I had shelved from the silver age and OH! SURPRISE! They work well with the D800e when they did not with the D300.

Happy as a lark with my new camera and my old lenses. Now I am kicking myself as I gave away a 135 prime lens to a friend in Spain because he kept shooting in B&W negatives. How do I miss that lens!!! :-(

I curious as to why you think the D600 is junk. I'm not crazy about it not being a pro body, but I think your opinion is rediculous... Junl ? How so ?

I notice he hasn't come back to justify his ridiculous statement!

Nikon keeps on releasing new prosumer cameras, RED cameras, and $1700 lenses that allow you to shoot in the dark... Well I've decided that untill Nikon comes out with a new PRO-BODY DX model, I'm going to keep my money in my pocket, refine my skills snd keep shooting with my most excellent D300s !
Hey Nikon, Put that in your pipe and SMOKE IT !

He he he... I would, for the most part, agree with you Edmund. I have been shooting with a D300 for a while now and still think its a great camera.

Though around a year ago I decided (for some reason) that I wanted a full frame body also. I went out and looked at the brand new D600 and I decided I just didn't like it. Mainly because the more compact body just didn't feel right to me. Also I didn't care for the fact that the front of the body, what I would think would be the most stressed part was back to plastic (albeit a very good plastic). Not sure why that bothers me, never had a problem with my D70, and I'm not particularly hard on my gear. I think I just got accustomed to my D300's feel. So I ended up buying a gently used (less than 10,000 actuations) D700. It's defiantly my go to camera in low light, but I still like the results from my D300.

I don't think Nikon plans to come out with a D400. Two reasons for my thought; One: Nikon is calling the D7100 their flagship DX body. Two: A big time pro friend of mine who is in tight with Nikon had heard no rumors of a D400 as of earlier this year.

I must admit a D7100's performance is tempting to me but I just keep shooting panos when I want more pixels to play with. High ISO light is not the D300's strong suit but I use a tripod when things get dim (even with the D700), so it's not a huge thing for me.

Oh, by the way, those shots are great Edmund! I especially like the second one. Great light, scene, and composition. The other two are also great, just like the boat the best. ;)

Happy new week to you all! :)

Nice shots, but this is exactly what Nikon (and Canon) does not want to hear. You have to buy the latest model to be able to get the best shots. The D600 is old hat by now. Get with the times! Spend money! :D

Too funny Jerry, do you have your D610 ordered? :-)

Thanks NikonJohn,
I thought along the same line. The D700 looked tempting, but I'd really like a new processor, sensor and a few more MP. I still get nice 20X24 prints with the D300s's 12 MP sensor but Id like to be able to enlarge cropped portions of some of my landscapes, and 12 MP just won't cut it. I think before I jump ship and buy a Canon 5 MkIII, I'll try one of those excellent Sigma 18-35 f1.8 lenses thatare getting such great reviews and see if the $800 investment dosn't improve things a bit...
A 24 MP D400 w/modern sensor & processor shure would make me happy...

Oh and one more thing. When I don't want to carry a big and fairly heavy (I use battery grips on both the D300 and D700) camera I did buy a P7700. The quality of the photos from that little guy are just fantastic.
Now Nikon has upgraded it to the P7800 in just one year by adding an electronic viewfinder but loosing the Quick Control dial. Not a great trade-off in my book, I use the Quick Control dial often. Now if they boosted up the buffer to fix the slow time between shots problem and made it weather resistant I would have wanted to upgrade, because those are the cameras only real faults for me.

Agreed! I've got a Canon EOS Rebel Ti3 that I just love (am also still learning how to use it). I can't invest in a high-dollar computer, printer & photo paper to print my pics to I take them to the drug store. No Photoshop here -- if I don't like it, it gets deleted! It's fun to take pictures that don't need to be tweaked - it hones one's skills!

I understand. :)

Actually as one of the things changed from the D600 is the shutter I think they came out with the D610 as a fix for the oil spraying shutter that they won't even admit is a problem.

I too have the battery grip on the 300s. it's a bit heavy, but it feels good in the hands and balances well. I wouldn't be without it now. I think for now at least, I'm gonna stick with my d300s and get a Fuji X100s for street and family photos.

Would you please specify what old lenses you have in mind? The should all work the same on D300 and D800 theoretically ...

I'm very happy with my D300 & D700 and I still have my D100.
