What you described, bothers me a lot. I was the brunt of one of those episodes, consequently I seldom post anything on this site. Sad, isn't it? I actually have a tablet beside my computer with the names of the frequent abusers. You would be amazed at my tally. It is only a few....but they are reliably rude.

While I know of many of them, I'm just so glad I'm not them...

I don't care how puffed up you are about your own excellence as a photographer, (pro or not), it can't be a good thing to downgrade someone else's work with snarky comments. You know who you are. You don't care that we know who you are.
Sometimes we admire a person simply because we admire their talent or skill as a great photographer, but when they make snarky remarks to someone who is just enjoying photos they made and so happy that they got them, they are stealing that person's joy.
This happens here too often and makes me wonder what kind of person feels good about doing a thing like that!
We may admire your work as a gifted photographer from now on but some of us will surely cease to admire you as the photographer you are, because of your pathetic attitude toward others.
That's all. I truly feel like I have not stepped on any toes that did not deserve it.
To the rest of you, I will keep looking at and enjoying your photos.

One side of the coin has been well delineated. That is, the people who feel it is necessary to denigrate someone else’s efforts. And for me, that is indefensible.
But what about the Pollyannas out there who feel it necessary to gush over the quality of a clearly mediocre snapshot? I realize that some of this is subjective; but if there are no standards for excellence, then there is no room for improvement. It would be best if those who are tempted to find fault would simply keep their mouth shut, and those who feel it necessary to praise everything they see to do the same.

I think that every photo posted on this forum is open for critique, positive or negative but keep it constructive. My exception is that if a photo looks ho-hum to me, I don’t make that comment.

You can only communicate at the level of that which another will allow, or are capable of.

Perhaps it would be helpful if a posted photo included a statement like "Your critiques are welcome" or "Please, no critiques."

Well said and I totally agree with you, Jo, for reminding that we are only human and should treat others as we want to be treated.

Whether or not something said is constructive is totally in the mind of hearer. Something offered as constructive can be taken bitterly and the most bitter criticism can be taken constructively. So be a good hearer.

“Whether or not something said is constructive is totally in the mind of hearer.”

Only if the hearer is good at self delusion….

I agree with you and find myself guilty upon reflection.
However, I dreamed about being able to do color photography as a youth, and now find myself repulsed by the fad of B&W.
Also by facial tatoos, ripped jeans, perpetual staring at phone, etc.
I do post photos, and know the sting of criticism. Especially for my tendency to overprocess. But the critiques have made me ease up somewhat. I just LOVE color.

Snarky remarks are never in good taste but having said that, there is a place for criticism here on the forum. It is called Photo Analysis. If someone wants to submit work there, responders can give accolades or explain why a photo isn't good. That is a separate section from the Photo Gallery. If someone's work is displayed in the Photo Gallery, it is common decency to either admire their work or if the shot doesn't resonate with the viewer, to pass on making a comment at all.
