Unfortunately the internet emboldens some people. They wouldn’t say that face to face. I don’t have to like a person to respect them. But respecting someone for their abilities or talent doesn’t mean I think they are a great person.

I’ve told my kids that they need to be better than other people. Not because of their name, race or money but in that they will do things other people won’t do and they won’t do things other people will do. And that they don’t tell people they are better, but to keep their mouth shut and let their actions speak for themselves. What annoys me is people that perform “selfless” acts of kindness and generosity but then post on Facebook and twitter telling the world about how kind and generous they were. In those cases they are doing it for themselves and the homeless person they bought a meal for was just a fortune beneficiary of their search for praise.

Absolutely. I can hear my dad's favorite saying in your comments to your children. "Be kind or be quiet."
And I know some who are kind to other just for the pats on the back they will get when they announce what great things they have done. Thank you for the nice comment.

It's sad!
I don't care how puffed up you are about your own excellence as a photographer, (pro or not), it can't be a good thing to downgrade someone else's work with snarky comments. You know who you are. You don't care that we know who you are.
Sometimes we admire a person simply because we admire their talent or skill as a great photographer, but when they make snarky remarks to someone who is just enjoying photos they made and so happy that they got them, they are stealing that person's joy.
This happens here too often and makes me wonder what kind of person feels good about doing a thing like that!
We may admire your work as a gifted photographer from now on but some of us will surely cease to admire you as the photographer you are, because of your pathetic attitude toward others.
That's all. I truly feel like I have not stepped on any toes that did not deserve it.
To the rest of you, I will keep looking at and enjoying your photos.
(and who even cares), but for some reason unknown ... (show quote)

Jo, as usual, you hit the nail right on the head. Thank you.

Well said, Jo, and I agree with you 100%.

Perhaps it's yet just another symptom of our "divided" country where it is all too common to ridicule others that don't agree with you. As a society, we seem to be losing the ability to disagree about something without respecting the other view. Definitely on the rise in our world, on this site, and pretty much anywhere on the internet.

I don't want to blame the internet, but it has made it easier for people to hide behind their anonymity, and it can be argued that led to increased bullying across all types of interactions, unfortunately culminating in or because of our country's inability to work together, to work across the aisle, to make concessions, etc....

That's one of few things that makes me so angry on this forum. I wonder how many good photographers have left because of someone's snarky comments. I remember a fella from Alaska who took fantastic whale photos and swamp gator who did alligators and the list goes on and on. I usually let the mouth have it with both barrels but usually the feelings have already been hurt and another leaves UHH, It's really sad. Admn should throw them out

I agree! I think Admin should give them a warning and if they do it again, ban them. I belong to a forum of Horsewomen and the Admin does not put up with ANY of it. If a bunch of women can clamp their hands over their mouths, surely anyone can!

I’m 100% with you, Jo. I especially love this analogy of “looking for perfection”.😊

It's too bad that some people feel they have to put others down so they can feel better about themselves.

Thanks Jo for doing your post. UHH should be a fun experience. Unfortunately, it isn't always.

Boy, you've got that right.

Some years back I was on a hard playing virtual game with a steady crew...picked up one fellow who just did not know how to communicate.
He kept at it and at it...thinking that's the way it is...using more mouth than brains

Out of the blue he tells me he will be coming through my area. My wife was gone for the day and all my vehicles were out and about. My personal vehicle was down at a shop getting serviced...I told him to pick me up if he was swinging by...give me a ride to town (30 miles)

He showed up...I got in.

He was polite from that day forward.

What you described, bothers me a lot. I was the brunt of one of those episodes, consequently I seldom post anything on this site. Sad, isn't it? I actually have a tablet beside my computer with the names of the frequent abusers. You would be amazed at my tally. It is only a few....but they are reliably rude.
