Years ago I purchased an f:2 15-35mm Olympus lens for my Olympus E5. After about 3.5 months is refused to focus. My camera actually locked-up when it attempted to autofocus. I called Olympus Repair and was told that, because the 90 day warranty had expired it would cost me almost $400.00 to repair the $2,400 lens that was almost new. I paid for the repair but vowed to never buy another Olympus product again and I never have.

A camera company that refuses to care about their loyal customers is less than useless.

I am now a Canon user with a useless fortune invested in Olympus bodies and glass.

That "useless fortune" could be a useful fortune. The UHH has a sell and buy section.

Needing a wide-angle zoom lens in the 16 - 28mm range and after doing some research I purchased the Tokina 16-28. Knowing that it would be returnable if unsatisfactory I purchased it from Amazon. It proved to be quite satisfactory for my purposes both times that I used it. The third time out it failed giving me an error message at any F stop smaller than 3.5. Given the fact that it had been 3 months since purchasing it, I was unable to return it to Amazon and discovered that the Tokina warranty applied only to lenses purchased from authorized Tokina dealers. Subsequently, I took it to a highly regarded local repair shop that informed me that Tokina does not sell repair parts to independent repair facilities and so it would have to be sent to the Tokina factory for an estimate. I suspect that the estimate will be more than I care to spend for this particular lens given the fact that it failed after two shoots. Lesson learned. No more Tokina.

And you probably don't know the person or company that sold the lens. Why blame Tokina for your carelessness. I have bought a couple of remanufactured lenses from Tokina. Excellent quality! And with a 90-day warranty.

If you buy from Amazon, take notice of who the seller is. It's not Amazon.

My experience has been different. I am a long time Nikon shooter, own (3 years, acquired for B&H AND Tokina direct) and use (4 days a week) the Tokina 24-70, 16-28, and 100 2.8 line up for weddings, sporting events, portrait shoots, and other large social gatherings. All perform as well as their Nikon counterparts at about 1/3 the price. Personal experience with Tokina support (only once) was flawless, as good as anything I ever experienced with NIKON. Tokina warranties their new lenses for 3 years. Nikon's warranty on lenses is 1 year. That matters to me.

China made products have a higher likelihood of poor quality control, this is WHY buying from an authorized dealer will provide some safeguard and IF not one must pay attention to the WARRANTY or return times... so you must use it a bit during this time frame to increase the quality or performance of the item purchased.. gone are the days of Walmart in the skies [ online buys] ...even Walmart has a 30 day time frame for returns.

good luck

If you purchased with a credit card, you may have an extended warranty within the credit card program. AMX and Visa usually do.

Definitely something to look into. I bought a Moto G4 phone that stopped charging after the phone's warranty had expired. But I still had a couple of months to go on AMEX's extended warranty. Submitted a claim and my money was refunded.

The key is buying from Amazon when Amazon is not the seller and doing due diligence.

I've found Amazon will take ANYTHING back for credit or replacement, no questions asked... but I buy a LOT from Amazon... many orders each month, even my weekly groceries. I haven't been in a store more than a few times since Covid broke out. If they send unsatisfactory vegetables or fruit and I complain, they send replacements immediately (Whole Foods is less than a mile from my residence.) If I'm not happy with something from their warehouse, they either send a replacement or credit my account. They will recognize a good customer... just like any other retailer worth dealing with. I am always confident placing an order with Amazon.

BUT... I rarely will buy something on Amazon if they are not the shipper from their storefront or their warehouse. I bought my Canon from Amazon, but not until I got a reply by e-mail that they were not selling the international model. Yes, due diligence even by a good customer before placing an order is mandatory if it is an expensive item.

You have poor, good, better and excellent products from China...price/support is usually indicative...as for QC.... In many instances we (USA) and Japan based companies trained them.... heck, I was supposd to go there (China) around/approx 1990 to teach them advanced materials processes/acquisition/MRP/manufacturing processes/scheduling processes, etc.etc. to help them improve jet aircraft production....(Yes, we taught them lots!! It's a strange world) .. Looking back I wish I had taken the assignment, but chose not to due to immediate family health concerns. China is like the way folks looked at Japanese products early on, we taught them too, and look how well they did... Now the biggies are moving into other areas of southeast asia, and elsewhere... US and Japan will be training those folks too.

Most consumers groups recommend NOT buying extended warrantees

I considered purchasing an extended warranty once. I took the description "extended" to mean that it was in addition to a manufacturer's warranty. Nope... I would have had two warranties covering the same period of time. Due diligence again.

Guess you thought the lens was a good deal from a non camera dealer. Nikon does same repair deal.
So how much did you save buying from Amazon and not a camera dealer? Tell us

Sidwalkastronomy is a SN and DUE TO 16 character limit I had to leave one letter out. I set up telescope in public areas and show people the universe.
I was asking questions about the great deal so others don't go down the same rabbit hole and get burnt.
Never understood why people would make a camera purchase from a non camera store and then are shocked that someone working out of his basement is better then a B and H deal.
Just a warning for people who look for the Best Deal.
I took my nap, retired here so I can. Whats your excuse for being rude

Sorry to hear of your experience - that said, I have that same lens and it works just fine. I've had it for 4 or 5 years and I'm happy with it.

I have the original Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 lens and it has performed flawlessly for me for years.

Not sure about US Consumer Law but in the UK all sales have to be "fit for purpose" and the seller is liable.

A lens that fails so soon clearly isn't fit for purpose and you would have legal recourse against Amazon. First recourse is against the seller, not the manufacturer, although if there was a manufacturer's warranty the seller would generally return to them.

I hope you get satisfaction.

To me the lesson is buy from an authorized dealer. Amazon sells some things itself, but some from other dealers who may not be authorized.
