So how does the saying about the photographer being more important than the equipment fit into this?

Would a similar crop from a D3300 look as good?

no!

Absolutely, ask anyone that owns the D850 and uses it for wildlife. Even my D7200 faired better than the D500 for noise. This of coarse is all done in the field and not some laboratory

Definitely true....most of the experts on Hog and other blogs have never used the gear for wildlife and have no examples of what they are talking about. It's why I put the topic on here backed up with the example.
This kingfisher was well over a hundred meters out!

OH, how I wish everyone owned a Nikon 200-500 on a D500.

Hi Bill! Do you have an example of a max crop with this gear?

The resolution and cropping abilities of this camera is extreme. Here's a link to a 3mp crop of some ducks I got earlier this year. https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-570993-1.html I also have samples of high ISO wildlife captured in Costa Rica. No comparison to the DX cameras...

Question I have a D850 and just started taking photos of birds around the house. I use the AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm 1:2.8G ED would it be better to use the D850 in DX mode or FX? Or would my older D7100 be better for birds with that lens?

i would move the bird more on the right side of center , so he is looking at left with more room .

I must respectfully disagree. I have four friends who have traded in their 850s for the 500. They have stated that the 500 is far superior in every way. Based on their experience I have bought a 500 and I am thrilled it. I have also done extensive research that indicate the 500 is the better camera.

So, this is based on opinions from some friends of yours???? I've owned both and have shot wildlife in all types of conditions. Your welcomed to your opinion, but it would hold more salt if you actually owned both cameras and shot wildlife with them, just saying..
