D850..."to crop or not to crop"

It's well established here that the Nikon D850 is a great camera for varied reasons. I bought it "in a fever" and use it only for wildlife and birding, cropping 95% of my photos. I must say that after buying the grip for the extra fps, the xqd cards, xqd card converter (4000 bucks later) that I had regret that I didn't get the D500 (a crop camera) for less than half the money. The 850 crops out at 19 mps and the D500 20mps.
Today at the wetlands my wife was taking a shot of a Banded Kingfisher (with the 850 and the Tamron 600 G2) and I was laughing cuz it was too far out!

That is why I keep saying MP matters for cropping - and cropping is better than extenders !

But, this works BEST if and when you maximize your native IQ - ie perfect focus and no motion blurs ....and lower ISOs.

I would surely crop, but not nearly so much.

Better learn your 'prey' habit and use that to get closer....

THEN the D850 shows its true color. To think that a D500 can replace it is being ill informed.

I have both cameras and each has its uses and issues.

I have got less MP than the 850 (D810, D750 / D7200) I run into this with bugs, less often birds. I will crop in as close as leaves an image I find acceptably detailed and sharp. That varies based on the light distance and settings. Be interesting to see an example of the maximum crop that works on this photo.

I basically agree with @imagemeister - I prefer cameras with a higher density sensor .... but Nikon seems to have decided that 20mp is plenty for this use, and you are very close to that. When you take into account the fact that mp is a two-dimensional concept, so density is a function of square-root of mp, even the "best" cameras don't provide much more room for cropping.

I think the only way you can compare crops is if you get the same capture with your D810. I have the D3200 and the D7100 and I KNOW that neither of them could compare.

Why doesn't Nikon make a higher mp camera then?

Just so yeah know I had the D500 and it's NO comparison to the D850 when it comes to noise. In fact my D7200 handle noise better than the D500. I'm glad I bought the D850 and would never consider changing for the D500 even without the extra battery grip.
