That's actually on my mind for the return. If I still have some energy, I'm going south through AZ and hope to drive some of RT 66. Thanks.

Sorry for your lost. It sound like you're trip will be good therapy.

RT 66 is especially good from Oatman Az to Holbrook, with some SHORT side trips. Oatman and seligman are really good, a little (lot) touristy, but good. Some areas of 66 are GONE, and have been given back to the people.

Your Utah party sounds great.... Don't forget, you could down a month there and still miss a lot......I have, and did.

Have a great, and safe, trip. And please report back, during and after.

Following old Rte. 66 from Albuquerque, NM through AZ is a photographers dream. Iconic long closed tumbledown gas stations, hotels, stores, etc. mostly intact. The Posada Hotel in Winslow, AZ if you like taking train pix. Also down the street from the Jackson Browne statue commemorating his and The Eagles hit 'Take It Easy.' Acoma Pueblo / Sky City is spectacular (although you have to pay to take pix). Further south the Very Large Array. Just love the Southwest. The light there is different and makes pix gorgeous just about any time of day.

I'm going to be taking an extended road trip in a couple of weeks, and I would really be interested in any thoughts/suggestions. My wife passed away a few months ago, and I've decided I need to get away for awhile. Here is my plan so far. Leaving from Milwaukee, I'm going to spend a couple of days in MN with some good friends. Then the trip will really start with a trip through the Badlands and a visit to Mt. Rushmore. From there, I am headed to Utah to visit a number of places, starting with Arches National Park. I was there a few years ago and did not get to Delicate Arch and want to visit that landmark this time. Next is a drive down highway 24 to Capitol Reef. From there to Bryce Canyon. Next is Zion National Park. The last 2 stops will be Monument Valley and Mexican Hat Rock. I plan to do some hiking (not the really hard stuff) and just take as many photos as I can. So any ideas you may have will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

So sorry about your recent loss. I hope the trip will ease some of the pain. You will be exploring magnificent areas and photographic treasures.
Enjoy and be safe.

Add Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness area and Vermillion Cliffs National Monument. Both have been downgraded such that oil and gas companies are being allow buy oil and gas leases. The realtors will not be far behind. See it while it still exist as a wilderness and monument.

The Minuteman ICBM site near Wall SD is operated by the NPS. You can visit an actual silo and the LCF where the officer could monitor and launch the missiles. This is an incredible piece of the SAC history that most Americans never knew existed and still exists with Minuteman III.

Be on watch for chain link fences about 10 feet tall enclosing about an acre. These sites will have large blue signs with a letter and number. These are active sites. You can stop and walk around them, just do not touch the fence as the USAF Air Police will respond. This is perfectly legal and what I am writing is not in any way classified.

I was in Minuteman Electronic Maint and I can assure you this is a stop as worthy as the landscapes.

At Monument Valley hire a local native guide and ride on roads only open to them to access wonderful photo vistas. The trip is usually for a half day.

Same advice for visiting Canyon de Chelley, in AZ and not that far from Monument Valley. I would add it to your trip.

At Arches remember that if you want to get a full moon picture at Delicate Arch, you need to do it one or two days before full moon if you want end of day light visible at moonrise. Canyonlands is right near Arches and you should visit it too.

Use The Photographer Ephemeris or similar tool or app to plan sunrise and sunset and moon related photo ops. The program will even show you shadow angles at places like Zion and Bryce.

For some sunrise locations best picture taking starts 30-60 minutes before sunrise time. Be inm place earlier than sunrise time.

Echo the condolences about your wife. If I lost mine I would need a really long trip also.
As long as you are taking the route you are, I recommend Colorado National Monument (Just on the south edge of Grand Junction, CO). Similar to some of your other planned stops but enough different to make it worth the while.

Been there, Lost my wife in '98 and hit the road to forget. One mistake I made, looking back, There's some places where I wish I'd spent more time. This will not help you to forget but will help in making the adjustments. We take life as it comes as best we can, no choice.

I did a similar trip last Oct, for similar reasons. I had lost my husband and wanted to get away clear my head and start to figure out what I wanted to do going forward. I loved Utah and Paige, AZ is worth the stop. Driving to Zion, I stumbled on to Dixie National Forest. The aspen's were turning and it was beautiful. Depending on your route back, you may want to consider northern New Mexico. Santa Fe, Taos, and Bandelier National Park are offer some great photo opportunities. Enjoy.
