I'm going to be taking an extended road trip in a couple of weeks, and I would really be interested in any thoughts/suggestions. My wife passed away a few months ago, and I've decided I need to get away for awhile. Here is my plan so far. Leaving from Milwaukee, I'm going to spend a couple of days in MN with some good friends. Then the trip will really start with a trip through the Badlands and a visit to Mt. Rushmore. From there, I am headed to Utah to visit a number of places, starting with Arches National Park. I was there a few years ago and did not get to Delicate Arch and want to visit that landmark this time. Next is a drive down highway 24 to Capitol Reef. From there to Bryce Canyon. Next is Zion National Park. The last 2 stops will be Monument Valley and Mexican Hat Rock. I plan to do some hiking (not the really hard stuff) and just take as many photos as I can. So any ideas you may have will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Just a thought- how about RT 66 West and the northern route back home,? Awesome trip.

However you go, have a ball and recover.

That sounds like a really good trip to blow the cobwebs from the brain. The more hiking you do (even if not the hard stuff), the better you'll be and the better your pictures will be. Don't forget Deadhorse Point State Park. In Monument Valley you can do the drive yourself, which is a real plus as you can stop when, where and for as long as you want. However, if you do a tour, you get to see places you can't go to on your own. I would do both, if you have the time.

That's actually on my mind for the return. If I still have some energy, I'm going south through AZ and hope to drive some of RT 66. Thanks.

Weather will be a consideration this time of year. Southwest is pleasant, but as you gain in elevation or go north you can encounter snow and ice. Grand Canyon north rim is nice and different than south rim. The Grand Circle is a nice goal, we did it over several trips. https://grandcircle.org/national-parks

Don’t miss Antelope Canyon(s). The two are about 70 Miles from Monument Valley and well worth the drive.

You are about 20 miles from Crazy Horse Memorial when at Rushmore and we saw more animals on the Wildlife Loop road in Custer Park than we saw at Yellowstone. And remember to buy a yearly National Park pass at Badlands (or your first entry), all other national entries will be free. (Believe pass was $20, cheaper than the single entry into Badlands).

Thanks, great ideas. I bought a lifetime senior pass to the national parks about 4 years ago. I think it was $10.

You are coming to Utah at a good time for fall colors. Erkibler is right about Antelope Canyon. There are also some state parks you should consider (Kodachrome Basin and Goblin).

Since you’re going to be in the vicinity anyway, make the time to stop at the north rim of the Grand Canyon, Antelope Canyon, and Horseshoe Bend. AC and HB are both at Page, AZ, and you’ll probably be going through that vicinity anyway on the way to Monument Valley.

Sounds like a great trip--I’m a bit envious.

Perhaps you can fit Sedona Az into your itinerary. If you’re in that part of the Southwest anyway and no telling when you might get back, you may as well stop in a place that has some incredible views. Just a bit south and west of the Grand Canyon.

Pleases let me express my condolences for the loss of your wife. People offer the usual conventions but sometimes don't know what to say or what you need.
Having lost my son, I had created many projects in his honor. I had recently posted a thread that was well received. Using a photograph of someone special create a wall hanging. That thread was:
"The Photograph That Can Tell Time!"
As for your journey, the farthest west I have even been is Pennsylvania. I'm sorry that I can't be of much help.

Maybe head down to Sedona - it is a great spot for day hikes - no major elevation changes to climb, but beautiful scenery around every turn. Also - just south of Monument Valley vy the town of Chinle is the Canyon de Chelley (pronounced "de-shay"). It is amazing - a beautiful canyon with cliff dwellings. Stay at the Thunderbird Lodge and take a Navajo-guided jeep tour into the Canyon. Very worthwhile. Sounds like a great trip.
