I am so sorry for your loss. I hope your trip is healing and can help you find peace. You have had many great ideas but I did not see that anyone mentioned Mesa Arch in the the Moab, Utah area. It is up on the plateau near Canyonlands. You need to arrive before sunrise but it will amaze you at the beauty of the glow on the arch. Safe travels and take your time. I think when we travel we always hurry too much.

I'm going to be taking an extended road trip in a couple of weeks, and I would really be interested in any thoughts/suggestions. My wife passed away a few months ago, and I've decided I need to get away for awhile.

Excellent idea. I did one of those for the same reasons last summer. Just drive, and stop at whatever looks interesting. Philadelphia, where I grew up, was my main destination.

Road Trip 2 is next June.

My sincere thanks to everyone who has responded. The ideas have been great and I’m going to use a bunch of them for my trip. Maybe I’ll be gone 6 weeks! And I also truly appreciate the kind thoughts and condolences that people have sent. It’s these kinds of things that bring me back to this forum every day. Thanks a ton!

If you can, schedule Antelope Canyon near Page, AZ. Incredible Slot Canyon and great photos!

Keep in mind the road to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon closes on Oct. 15, whether there is snow or not... won't open again until May 15. South Rim is open all year... and is still a magnificent place to be at any time of the year. Lots of good suggestions in this post.

Sorry to hear about your wife.

I think you will find that Mesa Arch is so near to Canyonlands NP that it is in fact in Canyonlands, in the Island in the Sky section.

Very sorry to read you have lost your wife. I can only imagine what a difficult time this must be for you. And I apologize if this has already been asked and answered (we're now on page 5) but what will you be driving? If you are in something sturdy (truck or SUV) consider the road less traveled to Cathedral Valley in Capital Reef NP. I've been there twice (both times in October) and it is on the top of my list of places I have been. But the road is rough. Unlike many NPs this part of Capital Reef is nearly empty of people. But the rock formations and cliffs are amazing. Google it and see what you think. It would be quite an adventure if you are feeling adventurous.

Is the Upper Cathedral Valley Overlook a good compromise?

Keep in mind it has been 10 years since I've been to Cathedral Valley. There are a couple ways in. One crosses the Fremont River off Highway 24 (no bridge - you must drive through the water, but not as bad as it sounds). You can also enter from a forest service road on the north end of the park. It is steep and rather rough but it has been my preferred way in. That road will drop you into north Cathedral Valley and the upper overlook. If you're serious do some research and go prepared. There aren't many people there. I've attached a couple shots to wet your appetite. And here''s a link to a map of the park. https://images.saymedia-content.com/.image/cs_srgb/MTQ4NTAyNjI3ODk2Nzk2Njk2/capitol-reef-np-map_npsx.pdf

I have a Ford Edge. Thanks for the suggestions. The way my trip is working out, I am going to Capitol Reef and have some free time there. Will check it out.

One thing I did not anticipate is how crowded it will be in the Moab area, among others, during that first weekend in Oct. I’ve encountered a number of booked hotels and hotels that have more than doubled theirs rates for the weekend. So I will be staying in some interesting places. BUT, I am totally looking forward to the adventure. I leave 1 week from today!

If it's an AWD Edge I think you will be fine on those roads. I have mentioned this area on UHH several times but to my knowledge nobody has gone there based on my suggestion. If you do Wags please send me a note and let me know how you felt about the area and what interested you the most. One last tip. Make sure your gas tank is as full as possible by filling up at the last available station before you enter the park. Good luck and I hope this trip is a salve for your soul.

Just a thought- how about RT 66 West and the northern route back home,? Awesome trip.

However you go, have a ball and recover.

White Pocket, Kanab, UT, is a great alternative to "The Wave" since it is difficult to get a permit. Also Antelope Canyon, Page AZ is awesome; both upper and lower.
