I'm going to be taking an extended road trip in a couple of weeks, and I would really be interested in any thoughts/suggestions. My wife passed away a few months ago, and I've decided I need to get away for awhile. Here is my plan so far. Leaving from Milwaukee, I'm going to spend a couple of days in MN with some good friends. Then the trip will really start with a trip through the Badlands and a visit to Mt. Rushmore. From there, I am headed to Utah to visit a number of places, starting with Arches National Park. I was there a few years ago and did not get to Delicate Arch and want to visit that landmark this time. Next is a drive down highway 24 to Capitol Reef. From there to Bryce Canyon. Next is Zion National Park. The last 2 stops will be Monument Valley and Mexican Hat Rock. I plan to do some hiking (not the really hard stuff) and just take as many photos as I can. So any ideas you may have will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Mt. Rushmore is currently going through a face lift. You should check their website for more details.
I would strongly suggest visiting tripadvisor.com. Just go to the site and type in the place you want to go, the site will then give you tons of useful information.
Wags, our condolences on the loss of your wife. Take some paper photos of her with you on this trip and when you fine those scenes, that speak of her, leave one of her pictures on a tree or under a rock and she’ll be making the trip with you.
We made a similar journey in the fall on 2016. You might enjoy out Travel Logs which are posted on our website. Under 2016 WNP. Www.ncribble.com
Enjoy your journey

I want to offer my condolences on the loss of your wife as well. I am so sorry that you have suffered this loss. Taking a trip is a good way to just let things go for a while. I hope you have an amazing time. Good luck and God Bless!

I took a big trip like that 10 years ago. Start up on Rt 2 and follow it all the way to Seattle, then down the coast to Sacramento, then east to Crater Lake, then down thru the old growth forests to view lighthouses, then inbound again for Zion, Yosemite, Grand Canyon. There are a bunch of side trips for National Parks, Monuments, etc. 9,000 miles and 25,000 photos.
If you pass "Hole in the Wall" on your trip to Arches take the time to stop in and take the tour. Amazing monument to human ingenuity. It will make you smile. Have fun!

...And remember to buy a yearly National Park pass at Badlands (or your first entry)...
Another good feature of having that pass is there is an entrance line for it by itself and there are usually only a couple vehicles in it!
Have had my lifetime version for years but understand they've gone up from $10 to $80, whew!

I would try and find an old friend to accompany you on your trip; someone who shares a lost loved one so that you won't be so alone all the time! No man is an island and we need other people sometimes.

The passes are $80 lifetime if you are over 62, still a bargain. Even better you can get a $20 annual pass but save them to credit toward the lifetime pass when they add up to $80. Good for all national parks, monuments, even half price on camping fees. There is only a special lane once in a while though, and it is for all passholders, not just old folks.

Very sorry to hear of your loss; there’s no doubt you are doing the right thing.
Now, by coincidence, Jeannie and I are also heading to Utah with our big dog Brandy. We are leaving in two weeks. More details here:
https://learningfromdogs.com/2019/09/09/bit-heads-up/NB: The idea of visiting the slot canyons came from here, that is Ugly Hedgehog!
For us our first time and the various links will be read soon.
Let’s hope we all have a great time!
So sorry for your loss.... safe travels. Enjoy your journey

My sincere condolences in the loss of your wife.
If you have not been to these, when leaving Minnesota, I would consider: Theodore Roosevelt NP, in NORTH Dakota, then head south to the Badlands NP, while in that area visit Custer State Park(!), Spearfish Canyon. Devils Tower is only 1 1/2 hours west of Rapid City, SD. Yellowstone NP, Then head to Zion.
If you do a Mapquest Route planner or similar, you will find these to be somewhat along your planned route. God bless!

Since you’re going to be in the vicinity anyway, make the time to stop at the north rim of the Grand Canyon, Antelope Canyon, and Horseshoe Bend. AC and HB are both at Page, AZ, and you’ll probably be going through that vicinity anyway on the way to Monument Valley.
Sounds like a great trip--I’m a bit envious.
I fully agree, don't miss going to the North Rim. Most visitors to the Grand Canyon don't seem to know that it is there, but is absolutely worth the trip.

Maybe head down to Sedona - it is a great spot for day hikes - no major elevation changes to climb, but beautiful scenery around every turn. Also - just south of Monument Valley vy the town of Chinle is the Canyon de Chelley (pronounced "de-shay"). It is amazing - a beautiful canyon with cliff dwellings. Stay at the Thunderbird Lodge and take a Navajo-guided jeep tour into the Canyon. Very worthwhile. Sounds like a great trip.
So sorry for the loss of your wife. I can't imagine.
Your plans for therapy are good. sb's recommendation on Canyon de Chelley is exactly the one I was going to make. I don't like Sedona, but that's a personal bias.
My wife passed away last year in August. I made almost the same trip and was gone for three weeks. If you are like me you need it. Go. Have a great time and take those pictures.
You might think about waiting for a few weeks to catch some of the fall colors.
