Maybe the "bargain" for the kits induces more sales, so a smaller profit per unit adds up to more profit in the long run.

Volume, volume, volume is king in mass market sales.

Perhaps I didn't explain it clear enough in my earlier post but you got it right here. Canon simply sells more lenses when you buy the kit instead of just the body. Many do not need and will not buy the kit if possible. I wonder what the resale price is for their kit lenses (ie how much will i loose if I buy the kit and resell the lense?)

Ah, but more and more of those beginners are just going for the camera in their cell phone, or is that a snapshot oriented camera with a cell phone added???

It may depend on who the person is.

When we got new iPhones last week, my wife looked at price. Period. I looked at the camera, but even I got the “iPhone 13” instead of the “iPhone Pro”, partly because of the financial arrangements.

In June I received my R7 from Shutterbug in Santa Rosa after ordering it only a couple of weeks beforehand. I don't know if they do mail-order.

I just went to a camera store and bought one about 3 weeks ago, though I think it was their only one. I'm liking it so far.

My complaint is that there's little to no "help" available. Not much in the manual - plus the print is smaller than small for my old eyes - and the books I always like by David Busch won't be out for the R7 until March! Guess I'll learn by trial and error... unless someone else know of another helpful book or video . Mirrorless is a new adventure for me.

Help content is restricted due to lack of final production models of R7 being available. There are two videos from Michael the "Maven" - R7 setup parts one and two, that runs through the camera setup and explanation of buttons etc.

I have no need for a kit lens. I have good glass that I like, so I ordered a converter. I will have to save for RF lenses down the road.
This is my preference.

Interesting.
I have L lenses but the 18-150mm looks like a super fit, good optics and easy to carry.

So you might as well get the kit, then try to resell the lens. Yes, it would be easier and less expensive to purchase just the body, but just raise the price perhaps $100 in your head and get it.

I'm still waiting for an explanation as to how, by selling a kit which is $400 more then the body alone (just checked the price) with a lens that is $500 more then the body if sold separately, is more profitable then just selling all the bodies they can. If Canon's only interest was profits they could just add $100 to the price of the body and all those who just have to have it right now would still be lining up to buy it. Like every other competent manufacturer Canon's preferred profit margin is figured into the unit price, for both body and lens separately in this case. Combining them at a reduced price may not incur much loss, if any, in profits, but it darn sure is not some big profit generator especially when you consider the ill-will it can cause in the marketplace.
Has anyone considered that quite often the manufacturer offers what the dealers request? Canon's input from it's dealers may just be that they want kits.

In business profit margin is one thing, but sales is king. Maybe by including that lens they made little profit on it, but they increased that sale by $400. And it really makes sense to include a lens since this is the first crop camera with this mount many people won’t have a lens to fit already.

You need to download the PDF manual. Not only will it be complete, but you can adjust the text size to whatever you want.
