Nice response but not worth a reply. There is always someone looking to create trouble on social media.

One of the many reasons I do not belong to any of the social media... There are many trolls out there with nothing better to do... Also all of my photos have have the copyright and other info imbedded in the file... I doubt the person complaining understands EXIF data... Chicago Canon has the right idea... just block the person...
I always enjoy your stuff... Keep on posting and forget about it

Wow, just had an upsetting situation happen on Instagram. I made a comment on a non photography post on Instagram and someone must have gone to my page, or what ever you call it, and looked at my photos. They then went on to say that many of the photos were not mine! They even said they had seen one on Nat Geo and was not mine and I was not giving credit! I responded to this person saying they were certainly all mine and the response back was there is no watermark and why do others names show up? Then proceeded to ask if I worked for Nat Geo.... I can only assume the other names they referred to are the people I tagged who were on the trip with me and I do not use a watermark, as many on Instagram do not.

This just really upsets me to be accused of claiming someone else’s photo! I did once again reply that I guaranteed that 1,000% they are all my photos and I was honored they thought my photos were Nat Geo worthy....

Best way is to tell them that the serial number of the camera is embedded in the EXIF data on the photo and the camera is registered to me. If they want to take it to court you have proof.

I really don’t like social media for two reasons. I’m not interested in how many times a person went to the bathroom, drank a cup of coffee or shared a photograph of what they had for dinner last night. Unless there going to bring over two helpings with all the trimmings, leave me alone.
The other reason why I don’t like social media is because there are a lot of trolls on media sites. They seem to thrive on the anonymity. When someone posts a photo or if I post a photo, I don’t do criticism because can be harsh. I ask the poster if I can critique their work, First.
Not because I’m a professional, but someone viewing the work. I also apologize if I offended the photographer. I learned this in High School. I also use it at work and this behavior creates a personal approach and I get more done. If a staff meeting lingers, I hold up a card the reads, “ELMO-Enough Let’s Move On!”

So there is so much positive response to your concern don’t let negative people TRY to harm you. They cannot because you have integrity, they don’t. Please read the book I suggested earlier. It is not a bunch of legal Mumbo-Jumbo but is intended to be read by people like you and I. Do the smartest thing.

BLOCK THE TROLL AND MOVE ON!

Just for the record.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with watermarking or signing your work, or at least, posting a notice of copyright accompanying your images on any social media platform or anywhere online.

The great artists of every discipline are known to sign their work and/or protect it legally.

Look at it this way: Wheter you are a professional or an amateur, it's your work, it requires your skill, effort, and financial investment. It is an expression of your creativity, passion, intellect and feelings- it comes from your heart and mind. Even if you do not expect payment for its usage, people should at least, extend the courtesy of asking and securing your permission before reproducing it, re-posting it or displaying it.

Applying a signature to work is not defacing or devaluing it- it is actually adding to its value.

In the olden days, the photographer usually preserved the negatives or original transparency which served as proof of the maker's originality. Nowadays it may be the time/date stamp in the EXIF data.

Of course, it is said that "locks are for honest people" so some dishonest folks will violate rules, laws and norms anyway. Nor is there a law was against stupidity. There are remedies for liable and slander- folks making accusatory or defaming remarks against you without proof. It not likely that most people are gonna take legal action against garden variety internet trolls- imagine- the courts would be inundated! So- the best approach is to identify your work and ignore the trolls and foolish people.

Remember also- the anonymity on most online platforms and forums, sometimes embolden some people to write things and falsehoods they would not say to your face. WORDS MATTER!

Seem we share a cultural background. I am a Brooklyn guy as well- Williamsburg and Bet-Sty! I, however, have the distinction of being thrown out of two of the finest Hebrew schools! I guess was not destined to be a Talmudic scholar! It all started to decline when the Rabbi said that Moses parted the Red Sea and I interjected that water weighted 62.5 lbs per cubic foot and that, therefore, would be impossible!

Philosophically speaking, I am or should be over 100 years old. I was raised by my grandmotehr- she was tough and simplified my religious/moral values. I guess you could say it is a combination of the Ten Commandments and the Golden Rule. Basically, don't' lie, cheat, or steal and always treat people as you expect to be treated. Violation of these tenets would not necessarily send me off to hell but bring on immediate penalties from the business end of a broom, a rolling pin, or whatever heavy object grandma was holding in her hand at the time of the violation. Saying bad things about others without reason would bring on an oral lavage with kosher soap!

Education? I noticed your comment to User ID about education. I too have a few letters after may name and some decent credentials. I also know folks that have very impressive letters- multiple degrees and doctorates, from the finest Ivy League Universities and yet have litte common sense and less morality.

Shalom, brother!

You have just confirmed my decision to not use venues such as Instagram and Twitter.

I think the original poster (PHOTOLADY2014) had handled it very well. I think as you do that she doesn’t need to prove anything to no one. As for a Watermark I never considered it as defacing my photographs. You do make a good point as a “watermark is for sad little nobodies with something to protect”. That is why I suggested a Poor Man’s Copyright. I have never heard of a radioactive copyright. Could you elaborate how this is accomplished. I would appreciate it and I’m sure other Hoggers might as well. You are welcome to private message me so as not to hijack this thread.

Instagram is a notorious thieving site. Your work could easily end up in an ad in China or anywhere. There are ONE BILLION Instagram users. I have an account, and post images of my framed pieces (not very often, I must say). I pretty much *hope* that nobody wants to go to the trouble of stealing one of my images using software to render it down from a frame, but if so, my reaction is <shrug> and I'll move on. The OP's response was justified, obviously, but it's peeing in the wind...you're just responding to one person, whomever that may be. And that's life in the food chain...

Now you know the wonders of "social" media. And you can't guarantee more than 100%.
