Jak, hard to pick one over the others since all three are great. I can not say why for sure but the Cooper's wins out for me.

You’re not the only one who feels that way. I find myself attracted to each of them, which is why I asked the question. #1 Is the most frequent choice here, but not everyone. For sharpness, color, and the tilt head pose...plus those eyes, I agree, but I love the drama of the pose in #3. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. jak

I find these are too dissimilar to actually choose. There are excellent qualities in all of them. May I ask why we are being asked to choose? Are you entering a contest and can only enter one?

I like the tilt of the head and inquisitive look of the first one and the fact that we see him in his environment. The other two are more similar, so I can honestly say that the third one gives a more graceful view of the hawk than the second one.

AzPicLady,

The why? Just for the reasons you’ve cited. Three photos of raptors taken in two days, each with its unique characteristics. You’ve hit it as to #1. The other two are also in their environment...bare branches near the top of a tree, but not buried inside the leaves. I like the negative space in those two shots. I think #2 shows the fierceness of the subject...talons, hooked beak, buffetted by the wind as it seeks its perch. The third is so dramatic...wings fully extended. It kind of reminds me of the hood ornaments on some of the classic cars. Reaching out, flinging itself into the sky. I just wondered what other UHHers might think. Thanks for your comments. jak

#1. Better background and more color.

kpmac,

I agree with those thoughts. I also like the starkness and negative space of ##2 and 3. They call to me in different ways so I thought I’d ask other UHHers what they felt. Thanks for your thoughts. jak

1 3 2 . 2 is not sharp .

Thanks for your ratings. I know #2 isn’t as sharp as the others. I think the head and eye aren’t too bad. I may have been a bit heavy in noise reduction, but you’re right that the feathers lack the sharpness of the other two. jak

Number 1, but number 3 would be fun to experiment with in post processing using overlays/textures. Nice!

Michael,

Thanks. #1 has the most supporters, and I can agree with most of the reasons given. The tilt of the head and the liquid stare of those beautiful eyes are very attractive. #2 lacks a it of sharpness, but you really see the killer in this one...sharp, ripping beak and powerful talons. I think I like #3 a lot because of its simplicity and action. I love the negative space into which the bird is castin itself. I might disagree about fillin that space with overlays or textures, but that’s just my stylistic preference. I could see #1 or #3 enlarged on my wall. First, though, I’d remove that twig from the bottom of the frame. I appreciate your choices and input, however. Have a great day. jak

Thanks very much for your choice. I really like the drama in that shot...throwing itself into the sky from its scarce roost. jak

photophile,

So nice to hear from you. I’m really drawn to #1 for its detail, pose, and color and to #3 for its drama and use of negative space. #2, while technically not as good as the other two, really shows the raptor’s fierceness...a creature to be reckoned with. Thanks for weighing in. jak
