I had the original M240 and I now have the M-P 240. The most significant differences between the two are that the M-P 240 has: No Leica red dot logo; sapphire glass (the scratch proof glass Rolex uses for its watch crystals) rear LCD screen (the M240 has Gorilla Glass); and the buffer in the M-P 240 is 2 GB while the buffer in the M240 is 1 GB.

With my M240, the buffer would sometimes get a data logjam when shooting. I would have to turn it off, remove the battery, reinstall the battery and turn it back on. I never had this happen with the M-P 240. that alone is worth the extra $600 cost IMO.

The sapphire glass rear screen is said to cont nearly $1000 on its own, so getting that upgrade plus the 2 GB buffer is quite a good deal for $600.

My M240 was starting to show micro scratches on the Gorilla Glass rear screen - you would not see them unless the light reflected off it at the right angle, but it was annoying. Gorilla Glass is resistant to major scratches, but it would still show these micro scratches.

The more costly sapphire glass on my M-P 240 shows no scratches and I have been shooting with it for 7 years, 2 months.
I had the original M240 and I now have the M-P 240... (show quote)

I think the white lens hoods, like the white lenses are generally for having a cooler lens since white reflects light and heat while blask absorbs it. Don't take MY word for it, go and lay your arm on a White car and a Black car on a 98 degree, sunny day and see the difference. By the way, don't leave you arm on the black car too long or you will get a burn... OUCH!!!

In the summer in AZ, there is no noticeable difference.

In my opinion the decision comes down primarily to cosmetics. . . . The M-P has a larger buffer . . . frame line lever on the front (I rarely use this), and sapphire crystal on the back screen. . . .

Many thanks. It was the (1) buffer, (2) crystal back screen and (3) frame line lever (in that order) about which I was most interested in hearing opinions. You are correct, everything else is cosmetic. I have read that the bigger buffer (even if you are not shooting a movie) is a real plus because of the slow speed at which the M writes data.

Thank you, Jerry. I still am hoping to hear first-hand, real-world experience from amateurs like me, as distinguished from the opinions of "experts."

It appears likely that the sensor on my M9 has the dreaded corrosion malady afflicting this type of camera. I'll be sending it to Leica next week to confirm the condition of the sensor. If confirmed to be corroded, I'll likely take advantage of the upgrade program (alas, more money after.... ). Hence, my question for the Leica-ophiles out there in Hedgehog land: Are the added features of the MP version worth $600.00? My abject apologies if this question is covered elsewhere; I could not find it.
