Actually, extensive testing by a number of organizations has shown that most often the sweet spot is two stops above wide-open. For an f/2.8 lens, this is usually f/4.5.

Here is a YouTube video to watch
https://youtu.be/Y8hgYq5wQJQ

This video shows you how to use the reference data from DxOMark to find technical photo equipment specs like the “sweet spot”. It has links in the info page that will take you to specific information you want to see. But watch the first part before skipping around, so you know the basics of using the tool.

My photos are too large to e-mail. Is there is a safe and easy way to compress the ones I want to send?

When I want to email a photo, open it in one of my editors (usually GIMP) and “export” it as a JPEG with 75% compression. I usually tack “‘em” to the end of the name so I can identify the file later as one for email.

I used to do underwater photography. This involves a lot of expensive camera equipment inside of plexiglass housing. At the time, my insurance company was Farmers Insurance. I had to get what was called an “All Hazards Policy”. I don’t know if they still do this, but I am sure that someone does. I never had to use the insurance. But a friend of mine, accidentally dropped a camera and lens into the ocean. His insurance company completely covered it. I don’t know who he had his insurance from.

From what I’ve seen, Hasselblad uses both Zeiss and Fuji lenses. Hasselblad and Fuji have a special relationship. It started when they jointly developed the Hasselblad X-Pan camera. As a Fuji user, I can attest that Fuji makes very beautiful lenses with incredible build quality.

Or is it that Nikon JPGs are not so good as, say, Canon, Sony, Fuji, Panasonic or Olympus?

The JPEG’s from my Nikon D810 are perfectly okay. Shooting RAW+JPG (or RAW+Fine) is a good idea. Then, if you like the jpeg, use it. But if you don’t, then process the RAW.

I also shoot Fujifilm cameras. The JPEGs from Fujifilm are some of the best I’ve seen. I also shoot RAW+Fine on all my Fujifilm cameras (I have 4). but I never seem to use the RAW file, because the JPEGs always meet my needs. Also with Fuji, the RAW file can be configured for Lossless, compressed.

One thing that I do when I start my editing with a JPEG file, is to read it in and save it as a tiff file. Then I read in the tiff file and do all my future editing to the tiff. When the image is ready for use, I export it as and 95% or 100% JPEG. If I plan on emailing it to someone, I export a copy as a 75% JPEG, to avoid attachment size restrictions.

The iPhone photo is sharper, with better contrast, IMHO.

That’s because he downsized the Fuji image file, but left the iPhone photo at its full resolution.

You downsized the Fuji picture and then compared it to the iPhone picture. This isn’t a valid comparison of the value of the Fuji versus the iPhone. You are not letting the Fuji take advantage of it’s technology. If you left the Fuji photo unchanged, you would/might see the advantage of the higher resolution. I say “might” because this photo’s subject doesn’t have enough of the type of elements and features that would stress the technical abilities of either camera.

For those of you who don’t want to read the article, the short answer is most manufacturers claim 5 years.

I agree. Just ask them. They will give you honest answers.

A friend of mine bought an M1 Apple. He has had many problems with all the Adobe products. I won’t characterize Adobe‘s efforts to adapt their products for the m1. I am not familiar enough with the situation.

A refurbished memory card is basically a used memory card that has been formatted and tested. Refurbished just sounds better than used.

That is correct. My recommendation to anyone who still has a camera that uses CF cards, is to buy a high-speed CF to SDXC adapter, and use sdxc cards. I use these in my Nikon D810 and D7000. I have been doing this for around 12 years and have never had any kind of a problem.

This is an adapter that I have used, and have had no problems.

It says right on it. It’s a Canon TLb. They were made between 1974 and 1976.

Google “Canon TLb” and I’m sure you will find all sorts of info.
