Hi, I am in the market to purchase a Nikon D850, and was interested in purchasing it from B&H, due to everyone speaking highly of them. However, i went on their site and they are now selling grey martket "imported" Nikon D850's. If I purchase a grey market item, Nikon USA. will not repair the camera. Do any of you have any advice on B&H and their new policy? B&H saves they will honor repairs, but what does that mean. I can use some guidance from all of you. This will be my first DSLR purchase. I currently have several film cameras and lenses all from Nikon.
Thank you in advance everyone. I am looking forward to moving into digital photography., but I do not want to make a poor purchasing decision.

It’s not a new policy. B&H has been selling imported gear for years. If you ask B&H they will answer your questions about repairs.

Mac, have you purchased a camera from them? Did you require any repairs And if so, how did it go?
Thank you for your reply.

I don’t buy grey market so I can’t help you much. I understand gm is identical to USA and I have not any problems with my USA gear. I use a Nikon Df that is 7+years old and have had no problems.

It's not like they're hiding anything. The description clearly shows imported. Have them email you when the USA model is back in stock. Nobody is trying to sell you a grey market camera without disclosing what it is.

Thank you for your advice. They (B&H)clearly marked the item "Imported."

I did this with a Nikon D810 at a local camera dealer in Los Angeles from Sammys; who was selling it refurbished with a UK Serial #. When it needed repairs, Nikon service was out, but they had a local repair shop that did the work. THe local shop purchased bodies and stripped them for parts.

See if there is one in the Chicago area.

Thank you for the information. I use Central Camera in Chicago. I will stop by and talk to them when I am in town in a couple of weeks. They had a fire last year and are just getting back on their feet.
Thank you.

In another thread in the past few days a member who works for B&H said that as long as he has worked there (several years) that they have always sold "imported" versions.

I've always heard that an authorized Nikon dealer who sells gray market won't be an authorized dealer for very long if Nikon found out. This begs the question, why has B&H not been punished by Nikon?

Just wondering.

Perhaps B&H has worked out a special agreement with Nikon concerning gray market items - an arrangement beneficial to both manufacturer and seller. With a company as big as B&H, such things can be negotiated.

"B&H saves they will honor repairs" What don't you believe about their statement? All cameras are "imported" I don't think any are manufactured in the US.

I am just curious. Is the savings difference that much compared to purchasing a U.S.A. imported Nikon?.
I have no strong opinions on this.

When I could walk into NikonUSA headquarters and hand them a camera that needed repair I would never consider grey market. Since moving to Delaware I would have to mail anything that needed repair. I trust B&H to take care of me in the same fashion Nikon does. Much of my photo gear came from B&H.

I do. I can't imagine buying a $3000 item that might be irreparable after it reaches one year of age. That's today's Nikon. Either buy the real deal USA Nikon model, or risk owning an expensive paperweight.

In this case, the savings is $0.00. I'm quite surprised to see this from B&H, selling both versions at the same price, and with very little distinction about the warrantees in the ad, and no mention at all of what happens to the "import" owner after the store warrantee expires.

I am surprised because that's the price of USA model. So gray isn't any less so why buy gray market?
