[quote=MSW]back in the ancient years of silver halide film (the glory days of films like Tri-X and Kodachrome)...
Thanks for making me feel old. I am “from the ancient years” and still shoot film. Agree with the flash sinc. and one reason I love by MF leaf shutter lenses. You can use a flash as fill up to 1/500th of a second.
Praise Eastman that Tri-x is still around for us to shoot. Alas, I have not been a chrome shooter, so I helped lead to the death of Kodachrome.
Horseshoe bend it a 3/4 mike walk from the parking lot, over the hill. Having been twice, it is something you need a ultra wide angle to get in one shot (seeing how I shoot film, the 21mm covered it).
If you have a chance, go to Monument Valley, and then just NE, Gooseneck State Park in Utah, you will find 3 bends in the river vs Horseshoe’s one.
You could make one very large loop, starting at Zion, through Page and Look through SE Utah back around to Hanksville to catch Capital Reef on the way back to Bryce. This will cover Three if the Five parks.
As a Navy Brat and now Navy Retiree, I just want to offer anlong over due “Welcome Home”.
Dad had about the same reception, with the luck we were close enough to small towns with a large base, not to get this reception too often.
Glad I don’t have to deal with this issue as film cameras never had it built in. Just a matter
Of maintenance. Buy used gear of film or digital is still a crap shoot based on care from previous owner.
Totally understand.’I had started
As a teen with 110, then Kodak 127, and my first 35mm was an Elctro 35.
The first camera the Navy gave me in Photo School was the mister Crown Graphic.... see a trend?
I shoo a merriod if cameras now, including two Bronica ETRS, one with a waist level finder, and LF and a Russian range finder.
For me, I pick the camera I want to shoot with for the outing. These is something comforting about using a ranger finder or waist level that you don’t get with an slr... the weight balance, the extra effort.
And then as pointed out,’it’s a feel you prefer, and how the body remembers.
Really depends on where I am, what camera and film I had handy. Most likely shoot candids of my fellow travelers if stuck on the train. This gets conversations started.
I drive truck unnin the area from salt Lake. Upnto last week, coming back from Billings, the smoke was everywhere. If you want to go to Glacier, look into flying into Great Falls to save a few hours driving.
Otherwise, fly to Bozeman, hit Yellowstone, come back via Ennis and then to Norris, and get shots of the fly fishermen on the Madison. Worth the side trip off of highway 191 (191 takes you from Bozeman to West Yellowstone. Or you can go to Livingston and enter the park from the north.
Can’t go wrong isnyou go looking for barns either.
Personally, I don’t do selfies with my iPhone, and even happier that I can’t snap a selfie in the bar... not take photos of my dinner.
Good point about miniaturation and technology changes. I know on my MF, f/32 is not at sharp as f/22, but does offer the extra step I need as I am limited in how I much I can work with the ISO.
Speaking for myself, other than a couple Conon Elans, all I have is manual... no metered prisim on my Bronica, nothing for my LF. I pick my ISO by the film I load, based on the project.
As I am shooting film in the Canons, I prefer to stay with the apature priority for my landscapes (they don’t move very fast). On the other hand, when I take my son out, I turn it to program and let him figure out his shots. He has enough to be concerned about in framing, so auto exposure/focus helps.
Seeing how I still shoot film only (other then phone), I ended up with five Canon bodies as they came with a couple lenses I wanted, as well as a duplicate body for my main shooter (for color and b/w when I don’t want to carry my MF)
Good luck on your lens hunt.
They now set up a 2 hour photo tour, where the normal crowd is limited. Of course, cost about $100 more than the standard cattle drive tour.
Sunday morning... the best way to start while it’s quite.
KEH offered repairs, Fosters in Salt Lake, and I know of a shop in Bozeman. There are too many to list. Good luck.
