I started trading, buying, and selling gear online about a month ago, to put together a 35mm film rig. Here is my result so far, with about $40 U.S invested. I've also learned quite a bit, and developed some skill in cleaning, replacing light seals and repairing gear in the process. My next step is an FD 300mm or 400mm prime. I will be posting images soon.

Seeing how I still shoot film only (other then phone), I ended up with five Canon bodies as they came with a couple lenses I wanted, as well as a duplicate body for my main shooter (for color and b/w when I don’t want to carry my MF)

Good luck on your lens hunt.

Nice! Those AE-1's are a milestone in film camera design. Please do post some images.

Here is an image I shot recently and subsequently edited. The camera was a Canon AE-1P with a 50mm f/1.8 lens. The film was Ilford FP4+ shot at ISO 250 and developed by The Darkroom. Aperture f/5.6; Shutter speed was not recorded.
The portrait is of jazz singer/songwriter Janet Planet who was performing an informal summer concert in northeast WI.

Nice picture Ralph! Can you send me the image of the damage done on your camera? I am still pissed off at the USPS because I sent it to you in excellent cosmetic condition. To some cosmetic doesn't matter but it is to me.

There was no damage done during shipment of the camera. As I showed you, the box got mashed, esp. on the top and one corner. I was worried, but - as you can see - the camera functions fine. I used zone focus to compose the shot above, then fine-tuned using the viewfinder. I plan to use the camera with Ilford b&w and Fuji color films for a while.

Thank you for your compliment regarding the shot. — Ralph

I know it gets a lot of positive comments, but I had an A-1 which was a model above the AE-1 and hated it. Ended up selling it, still have my EF and FTb. FTb is in my opinion one of there best cameras, one of the few camera of the time with a spot meter out side the F-1 and Nikon F. The biggest reason being that the A series cameras did not work without a battery. The batteries were not rechargeable. I am not good at remembering 100% of the time to turn off the camera, didn't have as much a problem with the EF I think because of were the on off switch was, and even then the EF would work manually and the FTb was the same.

I went about my film shooting quite differently and MUCH more expensively than you.
I was shooting with a Contax 137 which I love because it has motorized advance. BUT I was thinking of a few more lenses and figured they might be a bit expensive.
So I wound up spending $125 on a Canon EOS 1n since I already have thousands of dollars in L lenses. Now I can use ALL the same lenses I use on my digital cameras. Now that's COOL!!! LoL
Good luck on your film journey!
