If you have access to your camera take photos of everything you can related to the delay. Be mindful of all 1st responders by staying out of their way and not interrupting them in any way.

You have a fertile imagination that leans toward bloody circumstances here. A delay does not mean mass murder....

Every other photographer is probably going to be doing that. I am going to find a coffee shop, have a mocha, wait 45 minutes then start taking picture of fellow passengers as they got more and more irate. Who knows might even get some good fight sequences.

Depends on where I am.

If I were in Europe, where most train stations are in the center of the city, I would put my luggage in a locker, and go out into the downtown area for 2 hours and do some photography. I would want to be back in plenty of time to catch my train!

Here in the States, a lot of stations (on the East Coast, at least) are in the middle of nowhere, if this is the case I would sit and fume! There are not any lockers in the bigger train stations (terrorism and all), so I wouldn't be able to check my bags anywhere anyway.

Actually there are no more lockers in train stations in most of Europe for the same reasons.

Fuming is bad to your health...

If you mean on the train enroute as opposed to waiting for the train in the station, there is not much you can do, photographer or not. The Code of Federal Regulations (CFRs) restrict the conditions under which passengers are permitted to leave the train in those situations. I say this from the experience of working on the railroad for 25 1/2 years.

The replies so far are a fascinating variety of interpretations of the question, as well as clever humor from someone I thought of as a G.O.M. Before this dies out, I suspect a psychologist will have enough data to publish a paper!

1. If I'm hungry, find food.
2. If I'm not hungry, take a nap.
3. If I was on the train at the time of the delay and not allowed off, and am neither hungry nor sleepy, I'd read the book I brought with me (my mama taught me to always be prepared!).
3. If I'm allowed off (or maybe we never boarded?) and neither hungry nor sleepy, I would wander around to stretch my legs, strolling with camera in hand...just in case there's something that catches my eye to photograph. I would not leave the station because I'd be too worried about something happening that might prevent my returning in time. And besides that, what if it turned out to be only a two-hour delay and they decided to leave without me? Or what if they held the train for me and then all the other travelers hated me for it? Nope, just too much stress with that scenario!!

I need more info.. I usually use Amtrak when traveling by train.. If they say 4hrs, I would have to figure in the fudge factor which gives me about 5.5hrs. to kill. Worse case I would call up line and see if the train had already arrived 4 or 5 hrs before my stop. If not there they may be sending another train which comes from it's home port which I would then have to find using the train routes. If frustrated I would call my buddy Matt how's worked for them some 20 plus yrs. and get the real story. With that info I could then decide to take alternate transport if I'm in my home state or check the greyhound line as they stop near a lot of the train stations here in Florida. Am I stranded in a big city or out in the country. Am I using Amtrak or some other train.. I need more info.............

I would take a buss. But than again I might have to sit next to some sweaty fat lady. Maybe I should just catch the next train.
