I'm not a big fan of touchscreens. We had a Sony camcorder with a touchscreen. After several years, it stopped working, and the camera became unusable.

My 77d has a touch screen; it is a boon for changing settings, accessing Menus and working in LiveView.
It's also very useful when reviewing images.

You had a product feature defect/failure after "several years";why denigrate a feature used successfully by millions of users of cameras, tablets and smartphones?

Who really needs an eleven pound lens?

I'll retire to Bedlam!

Well it finally happened. Somehow my camera was changed from JPG fine to course, 6000 X 4000 to 720 X 480! All I can think of is I must have hit someting on the touch screen. Camera is 80D.

I've got a 77d; never happened!

Solution: always check your settings!

Mr. Goldfield, the 18-400 lens I am talking about weighs 1.4 lbs. and seems to cover most of the potential situations I can think I may be in.

Thanks

That weight is certainly acceptable; my apologies!

I do well with my one Canon 77d using either the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 or Tamron 18-200mm.
For special situations, I have a Tamron 90mm f/2.8 and Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8.

Of special note is my Sigma 30mm f/1.4: same angle of view I got for 30 years with my AE-1 and its 50mm f/1.8.

Carry light and get more shots!

I suppose it depends on what you photograph and how much weight you are willing to carry around.
My all around carry is comprised of 2 cameras: a Canon 1Dmk4 with 70-200 2.8 with a 1.4 or 2x extender attached, and a Canon 1DSmk3 with a 24-70.
it is unusual to see me with just one camera when I am out and about taking pictures.

Perhaps you should try one camera with a reasonable lens; you might just end up with more successful shots.

Thank you all for previous comments on long lenses for Canon 80-D. I have just read a number of reviews
on the Tamron 18-400mm lens. There were a lot of positive comments. Any one shooting with one now?

Sounds like it might be a good all around one to carry.

MikeC

How do you figure a lens with an angle of view equivalent to a 640mm lens (1.6 crop factor) and probably weighs about 4 pounds makes for an "all around carry" lens?

Just got an email from Topaz Labs. They are touting a new program that converts JPEG files to RAW files.
It's $79 for the program, but there is a free trial version.
Some info from the email...

Edit JPEGs as if you shot them in RAW.

Topaz JPEG to RAW AI uses machine learning to do what was previously impossible: turn JPEGs into high-quality RAWs for a better editing experience. Ever come across the perfect shot and all you had was your phone? Now you can take the shot, then take your compressed JPEG image and convert it to RAW in Topaz JPEG to RAW AI. It's the next best thing to having your trusty camera gear on hand! With JPEG to RAW AI, you can prevent banding, remove compression artifacts, recover detail, and enhance dynamic range. As the first and only A.I. software for transforming your JPEGs into RAW files, what used to be impossible is now possible.

I accepted Amazon's offer of an Amazon Prime Store Card a few years ago. I use it only for Amazon purchases, and I earn a rebate every time I buy something. I use those rebates when I buy from Amazon. They just sent me an email telling me that I earned $261.32 in 2018, and $69.16 so far in 2019. I can't think of any reason not to get one of these cards if you buy from Amazon.

Okay, so what's your point?

Thanks. I guess I'm wondering how much more low light performance should be expected when moving from a 2.8f to a 1.4f. Is it enough to warrant spending $449 for the new lens?

Two stops can make a big difference; however, at f/1.4 your DOF will be dramatically reduced. Also, most lenses don't perform at their best when you use the largest aperture.

Six months ago I upgraded from the T6 to the 77d; a very beneficial and satisfying move. My favorite lenses are the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 and the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 (gives the same angle of view as a 48mm on a FF dSLR or 35m SLR with a standard 50 mm lens).

When I need distance, I resort to the Tamron 18-200mm or Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8. The Tamron 90mm f/2.8 1:1 Macro rounds out the picture.
