Just got an email from Topaz Labs. They are touting a new program that converts JPEG files to RAW files.
It's $79 for the program, but there is a free trial version.
Some info from the email...

Edit JPEGs as if you shot them in RAW.

Topaz JPEG to RAW AI uses machine learning to do what was previously impossible: turn JPEGs into high-quality RAWs for a better editing experience. Ever come across the perfect shot and all you had was your phone? Now you can take the shot, then take your compressed JPEG image and convert it to RAW in Topaz JPEG to RAW AI. It's the next best thing to having your trusty camera gear on hand! With JPEG to RAW AI, you can prevent banding, remove compression artifacts, recover detail, and enhance dynamic range. As the first and only A.I. software for transforming your JPEGs into RAW files, what used to be impossible is now possible.

A JPEG is made from discarding light data from the RAW and then discarding the RAW, all in camera. Topaz may be able to simulate the tossed light data, but it can't be put back. That said, Topaz is pretty good at inventing things!

They are using AI to replace missing data it seems.

I believe that Adobe’s DNG converter does the same.

P. T. Barnum seems to have joined the Topaz Marketing team ...

And I say that as a happy Topaz user for multiple modules. If I want the best result, I shoot with the best technique, using my best equipment and capturing the image in RAW, not using my phone and thinking I can "AI" the missing data back into the JPEG.

What if you get a once in a lifetime shot with a phone when you don't have your best gear with you?
This program might be able to make that shot better than it originally was.
Nobody knows how well something works until they try it.

Have your best gear with you, that's why you bought it.
Or live with the memory in your mind and save $79 ....
What's that old yarn about the sow's ear?

I'll watch from the side lines..... I'll never need it, I never delete my raw files.

Once the jpeg is made the data is lost, and if the raw file is deleted also, you can not recover period. All this program is doing, is second guessing by AI, and adding info, then saving in in a raw format.....I don't see how that can be as good as the original raw file.

I'm sure everybody has their best gear with them 24/7.
