Thank you all for previous comments on long lenses for Canon 80-D. I have just read a number of reviews
on the Tamron 18-400mm lens. There were a lot of positive comments. Any one shooting with one now?
Sounds like it might be a good all around one to carry.

I learned about it while at Yellowstone this past summer. I was shooting with an 18-140 and Sigma 150-600 on a Nikon D5300 in the park. After I got the 18-400, it became my favorite walk around lens, and I rarely ever used the 150-600 again. Need I say more?
A great carry around lens. I find it sharp.

I just bought one a month ago and have been really happy with it. Clear, crisp pictures. Light weight makes it a great all around carrying lens. It looks like a great bargain for the money.
Using it on a 80D

I have a Canon 60D. The only lens I have is the Tamron 18-300. Tamron didn't have the 18-400 when I purchased it. I love the lens. Nice and sharp. I imaging the 400 is just as sharp.
Rich...
I have it and use it on my Nikon D7100. Sharp photos and great lens but I still go back to my 18-105 kit lens for everyday carry. Not trying to discourage you on this but the kit lens fits my needs and I don't normally use the length that other do.

How do you figure a lens with an angle of view equivalent to a 640mm lens (1.6 crop factor) and probably weighs about 4 pounds makes for an "all around carry" lens?

I suppose it depends on what you photograph and how much weight you are willing to carry around.
My all around carry is comprised of 2 cameras: a Canon 1Dmk4 with 70-200 2.8 with a 1.4 or 2x extender attached, and a Canon 1DSmk3 with a 24-70.
it is unusual to see me with just one camera when I am out and about taking pictures.

Perhaps you should try one camera with a reasonable lens; you might just end up with more successful shots.
Mr. Goldfield, the 18-400 lens I am talking about weighs 1.4 lbs. and seems to cover most of the potential situations I can think I may be in.
Thanks

That weight is certainly acceptable; my apologies!
I do well with my one Canon 77d using either the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 or Tamron 18-200mm.
For special situations, I have a Tamron 90mm f/2.8 and Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8.
Of special note is my Sigma 30mm f/1.4: same angle of view I got for 30 years with my AE-1 and its 50mm f/1.8.
Carry light and get more shots!

I would not consider it a all around one to carry because of the WEIGHT.
I have the Tamron 18-400 lens for about four months and I seldom have any other lens on my camera. I find it is a good all around lens. The only limitation with it is low light situations.
Thanks for your professional opinion. I will weigh my thoughts and try to make a decision.
