I am well aware of air instability effects from my amateur astronomy days. That's one of the reasons that high elevation sites are preferable - less atmosphere to peer through. I know some of the professional astronomers use telescopes with computer software that can help dampen this atmospheric movement effect. Anyone know if such software might be incorporated into consumer cameras in - say - the next decade or so?

Here is my situation. I take pictures of ships and tugs over salt water at a distance. If the air is still, I can get good pictures over a considerable distance. If the air is very unstable, especially on hot days with heat ripples, then only very close pictures are acceptable. Are there any tricks to making pictures better? Next time out in bad conditions I am going to see if cranking up shutter speed will help or not. Mother Nature gives us challenges over and above bad lighting - which I continually fight with ships showing only their shadowed sides.

Especially interested in knowing if any desert landscape photographers have a trick or they just wait it out until conditions cooperate.

I take a lot of photos of tugs, barges, ships, sailboats, cruisers, kayaks and you name it, I shoot it. My trick is, I almost always use a CP filter, low F stop, and high speed. As you mention, you can't choose your time but I've had great results on the clear cool days and especially during the golden light morning and evening.
The hardest time that I have had is mid day during the summer.

My prints all come out too red on my cannon , but not on my HP all in one. I have put in paper type, the monitor has been calibrated, checked print nozzles.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

I had almost the same problem with my Pro-100. I tried just about everything, cleaning, deep cleaning, etc. and it still did the same thing. I even tried reinstalling the print head but that didn't help. Finally, I talked with Canon customer support and they were excellent. We tried a few other things but still the same problem which was it wouldn't print anything in color. They sent out a replacement printer which I received in one day and it is working very well.

I've had good luck with using a large photo mat. I usually have a number on hand as I do my own matting.

They come in all kinds of colors.

I know that this may not help with these image but for future portraits with a similar problem, you could try and use a CP (Circular Polarizer) filter.

I had exactly the same problem with Elements 14. It was working fine and then one update with Windows 10 and then it gave me the not enough RAM message. What I did was upgraded my computer with a 2 TB hard drive, upgraded the RAM to 8 M and bought Elements 18 and it works great.

Last year we went on a tour boat that took us to an island to see the Puffins. It circled the island a number of times and we were able to get some good shots with a decent telephoto lens. You are on a moving vessel so a tripod is out of the question. It was a nice trip and I was also able to get some good pictures coming and going from Boothbay Harbor. Good luck.

I have used a Western Digital to back up everything, including thousands of pictures, but also have an account with Carbonite which also backs up everything remotely. This maybe over kill as the WD drive is in a fireproof box. This may be over kill but the cost, especaily of the WD drive is so cheep that it really is worth it.

Thank you all for all of your ideas. It has got me to do some evaluation as to if I want one bag to carry everything of just enough to be comfortable to carry around while taking a long walk on the beach or taking along on a day trip. There are a lot of options out there but I do like the looks of the sling. Thanks again.

I need a new camera bag as my old one just isn't big enough. I'm looking an over the shoulder type big enough for one DSLR (Canon EOS 70D) and just one extra 16-400 lens. I want something that will be easy to grab the camera but give some waterproof protection. My price range is flexible but I'm thinking about $ 50.00 or so.

I've been kayaking for a number of years and have always had a camera along to capture some great scenery. I've had the best luck with a Pentax W90 that is water proof and shock proof. I usually leave the DLSR at home or in the car as there is just no way to keep things dry on a kayak. I usually have the Pentax secured with a tether and in my lap at all times as you just never know when something will come up that is a good photo.

Before I was born, my dad was a member of a photography club and they had contest that my dad submitted about 100 matted B&W pictures. These prints were kept in a big box that my sisters and I would look at upon occasion. We still have that big box and, what is amazing, is just how fantastic some of these prints are. These were all done in the 30s with a bellows type camera with no automation, what so ever. Not only that but he had a very limited number of exposures as the film was in individual sheets loaded into carries that had to be put on the camera one at a time. All of the photos were developed and printed in the darkroom that my dad built in our basement and the enlarger was made from a model T headlight enclosure. Many of these photos are absolutely works of art. Who knows, maybe someday one of my descendants may look at a few of my prints and, hopefully, they will be at least half as good as my dad's.
