When she starts quoting Sarah Palin and Ted Cruz her credibility falters. I'll need to look up her recommendations for the bankruptcies, pre-existing conditions, and emergency room visits. While I'm at it I'll look up her diatribe on the war in Iraq - built on lies - the patriot act which assaulted many more freedoms than Obamacare, etc.

Some people are just mouthpieces, unable to form an opinion on their own, they repeat what they hear and it supports their own uninformed choice. This person clearly knew nothing about Nikon, gear in general, or photography, and your reaction to his "view" should be commensurate.

Glad you got the new glass and are enjoying the combo. Depending on the subject it can make a big difference as you have found out.

These two nail it.
Know your camera, plan your shot, practice, and practice some more, try things you haven't done and don't understand, then practice some more.

And one more thing....continue to ask questions! Try things, ask here why they did or didn't work. As you have seen the group is more than eager to help and share.

Mine did the same thing. You need to add .exe to the filename so the system knows what to do with it.

It looks to me that either there is slight camera shake, there was a slight wind or the lens is a bit soft - hard to tell. 1/800 should have been OK, along with the f/7.1. If you had the VR on the lens on, turn it off on the tripod.

What tripod did you use?

I use a meter - especially for flash. The Sekonic L358 may not be the best but it works and with the pocket wizard transmitter set up is quick and accurate. They are readily available used so you can get set up for not a lot of money.

I use Sekonic L358 and it works pretty well, has the transmitter for pocket wizard. I can't speak to accuracy vs minolta but it has worked well for me.

I can't see the exif data but aside from being a little dark the composition, focus, sharpness seem pretty good.

Jefferson said "democracy demands an educated and informed electorate", and "If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be."
