I have a Nikon D40 and a D7000. I am considering getting an external light meter. Unfortunately, as always, price is a factor. So if anyone has a recommendation for moderately priced but effective light meter I would appreciate your advice. Thanks in advance.
I too am in this category, I'm leaning towards the
Minolta Auto Meter IV F, which has been recommended by others here, and can be had for a reasonable price on ebay.

I use the Minolta Flashmeter 5 for studio wok but the bone I have had since new and will never be parted with is the Weston Euromaster

Thanks for the reply. I will look into the Minolta.

Thanks for your reply. I will look at the Flashmeter 5 and the Euromaster but I do very little studio work.

You can't go wrong on the minolta meters- they are very accurate.
I use Sekonic L358 and it works pretty well, has the transmitter for pocket wizard. I can't speak to accuracy vs minolta but it has worked well for me.
I went with the inexpensive sekonic L308S and I have had it for almost 2 years and it has been great. Has never let me down. I use it at least 5 days a week. I always had figured on upgrading to the 358, but this little guy works just fine.
Gossen Meters. Check out EBAY and/or Amazon.com.

Well, carp! I just bought the IIIF two days ago for sixty bucks. I still think I got a good deal, and it works perfectly. I got it for studio strobes.
Anyway, I wish I'd seen this post before I bought it.
If it's free, it's for me!
I have used Seconic incident light reading (reads incident, not the reflected, maybe close to what you need to know) meter for the last 15 years or so, and its predecessor manufacturer's model since 1953. Pick your model according to which one has at least the features you can't live without versus the price. They have a full array. They are the best and simple to use and are infallible with the standard and simple using technique. Go to a camera store and step out and try one. And give that corporation a call and get some literature or review their website for models, capabilities, and pricing. CIO. Check it out. Go ping-pong ball. You'll like it ! ......
