From a Google search it appears that...

IMO,

Take it to a camera shop. They may have experienced the same thing in the past.
A good store won't charge for a simple fix.

What camera body?

I just bought the Nikon AF-S 200-500MM F/5.6 Zoom for $1500 CA.

I have not fully tested it yet, but looks pretty good so far and it has VR.

A bonus for hand held birding, although the lens is quite heavy.

Here's another one.

Hi Dave,

I found that several less expensive cameras do not handle low light shots well.

The best time of day for landscape photos are the Golden Hours. 1 hour before and after sunrise and sunset.

So, for under $1000, I would look for a refurbished or lightly used Nikon D7100 (around $500).

The D7100 is excellent in low light.

That leaves room for two lenses.

The Nikon AF-S 18-70MM F/3.5-4.5 DX is about $150 used on Ebay.
It will serve you well for the landscape Golden hour shots.

You can't afford a super telephoto on that budget, but the Nikon AF-S 70-300MM F/4.5-5.6 ED VR is a very good mid-range telephoto lens that takes sharp images and can be easily hand held.

I paid $550 new, but I have seen them on Ebay used for as low as $280 CA.

If you set the camera image to JPEG with 1/3 crop, you will gain further range.

A DX camera at 300MM is equal to a FX at 450MM.

You won't get a close up at super long range, but will get decent ones of wildlife.

Attached is a shot I took at a rodeo from the stands about 60 yards away with the D7100 and 70-300MM lens.
@300MM F/8 ISO 280 JPEG Fine No Post Production

I have dozens more just a sharp.

There's the under $1000 Combo I would take to Alaska.

PS:

IMO, try to stay away from kit lenses.

More plastic, not as good glass.

I have a D7100.

18-70MM Nikkor AF-S 18-70MM F3.5/4.5 DX ED Zoom lens
AF-D Nikkor 50MM F1.8 DX Prime lens
M100 Tokina 100MM F2.8 Prime Macro lens
70-300MM Nikkor AF-S F/4.5-5.6 G ED VR Telephoto lens
200-500MM Nikkor AF-S F/5.6 G ED VR Telephoto lens

My lens that is used the most is the Nikon AF-S 18-70MM lens because it is so versatile.
The Tokina 100MM Prime is the sharpest.
It's a tossup between the 50MM Prime and the newer 70-300MM Zoom for second place.
I just bought the 200-500MM last week so cannot give an informed report yet.

With the 7100, you can go cheap with AF-D older prime lenses that don't break the bank.

However, I find the newer lenses, in general, have better glass.

I have read at more than one site that the 18-70MM has less distortion even at full zoom than the longer wide angle zooms.

This guy says it like it is..

http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/reviews.htm

You might think that I took the attached shots with one of my primes, but no, it was the 70-300MM at full zoom.

You can't get much sharper than that unless you buy a Zeiss lens.

IMO, 4K TVs do not render realistic color.

It's almost like HDR.

Motherboard firmware contributes to video rendering to some extent as well.

The last three systems that I built for myself had motherboards with the ROG sticker on them.

Republic of Gamers only put their sticker on the best of the best that is available at the time.

You don't have to take my word on video cards.

If you want the best hardware review site for the last 15 years or more (including monitors), it's Tom's Hardware.

IMO, as others said the D810 is superior in many ways, but as a retired senior on a fixed income, I bought the D7100.

I was thinking of the Tamron, BUT LO AND BEHOLD, Nikon finally came out with an affordable telephoto lens (if you think $1500 is affordable).

AND, it has VR!

AFS-Nikkor 200-500MM F/5.6E (Fixed) ED VR Lens

I just bought it last week and have yet to get out to the marsh to take some shots.

But I took a few in the local park-see attached.

It was a really overcast day so I think it did pretty well.

Start doing some arm workouts if you are going to hand hold. This is a heavy lens.

With the cropped sensor I get more range, but one can add the 14E-III teleconverter to get to the same range.

The other Nikon teleconverters with more reach work but only in manual focus.

You could stack two 1.4s if you can afford it.

My 2 cents

Hi Peter,

A true Macro is 1:1

I have a Nikon system but for Macro, I went to the Tokina 100MM Macro lens.

The sharpest lens in my bag.

HERE{url}{b}{u}http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/393445-REG/Tokina_ATXAF100PROC_100mm_f_2_8_AT_X_M100.html{url}{b}{u} is one for Canon mount.

Great for portraits as well.

I hope you have patience. Macro photography takes more patience that any other type of photo genre.

Hi Marc,

You're mixing up computer ram and video ram.

Computer ram at 16 GB is plenty for most tasks unless maybe you are doing CAD.

I believe the video card that you have has 1 GB of video ram.

That's fine for photography, but a bit lame for Gaming. One 3 GB or 2-2 GB cards in tandem would be much better.

But the quality of color for photography purposes is not all the video card.

At least half is the monitor and how well it is calibrated.

I have a Sony 27" monitor with my new system. It was $400 when new because it plays PS 3D DVDs.

The best monitor for true color I ever had was a Samsung 215TW 21.5" monitor.
If you can find one on Ebay, you could get it cheap since it is about 10 years old.

I gave my brother my old system and he still uses the monitor.

IMO, the best video cards are ones made by XFX.

The guts used to be Nvidia, but they switched to Radeon a few years ago.

My current card is a 7970 XFX 3 GB.

My 2 cents

Hey Joe,

Super equine shots!!

Where I live the camera might survive but in the middle of winter here YOU might turn into a popsicle if you stay out too long!

PS:

When I look closely at those very good shots, I can tell they are from a
Canon. I can't explain why my eyes see that.

Maybe it has something to do with the type of lens glass that makes the hue or saturation differ.

All I know is what my eyes tell my brain.
