I have the opertunity to purchase a really clean used D7200 body for a really good price. It's just the body, no lenses. I own no lenses that will fit a Nikon body. I'm looking for advice on lenses. I don't have a lot of available funds in my "for photography" account at the moment, so I can't just go out and buy what I think would be the right lenses. I'm soliciting suggestions on what lenses to get on a budget that will compliment the camera and not anger the wife anymore than she is. Her exact words when I told her about the D7200, "what do you need another camera for, didn't you just get that new one a couple weeks ago?"
If it wasn't for the distinct red stripe I could have gotten away with not telling her. When she borrows one I always ask her, which one and her response is, the black one you showed me how to use.

The standard Nikon 18-55mm kit lens is pretty good quality. In fact, I think I have seen some comparison articles on the kit lenses of the major manufacturers and the Nikon stood out as having great quality. I see them frequently on Ebay for less than $100. You can find the non-VR version pretty cheap.

I have attached a pic of a tomato worm I took a few yrs ago with a D80 and the 18-55mm non-VR lens.

Depends on your budget. I use an 18-300 mm as an all purpose carry around lens The 3.5-6.3 is about 650.00. Tamron 18-200 mm, about 180.00

For general everyday shooting I would recommend the Nikon 18-140. They are not cheap but not terribly expensive. I have one on my D5100 backup camera and find it general a good overall lens.

Not long ago someone pointed out that kit lens that came with the last film Nikon was a super sharp lens even though it was made a little on the cheap side. It is a 28-80 mm f/3.3-5.6. I bought one on E bay for $20 and my wife uses it on a Nikon D80 and it works well for her. I see them all the time for under $35. Since your camera has a focusing motor their are lots of old auto focusing lenses that do not have a motor on E bay at great prices. If you don't mind focusing just about all old Nikon lenses will work on your camera and will work on A so you can have auto exposure. Have fun with your new Camera. - Dave

I have one of those. It is indeed a very good lens. It is true that the plastic body feels cheap, but what great optics.

I suggest a used or refurbished Nikon 18-55 VR, Nikon 18-105 VR, or Nikon 18-140 VR. Try keh.com, B&H, and Adorama for a new, used, or refurbished one.

When I shot Nikon, the 18-70 was on my camera 80% of the time. KEH has them for $99-$168.

If the only reason you are buying the new camera is because it is a good price, maybe take a deep breath and forget about it. If it was the same brand you are using, or you are planning to switch 'allegiances', that's a different story.

It's not just about having lenses that fit only one or the other body, it's about being able to use the camera without having to think about which camera you are using.

I'm not saying don't get it. If you do, the lens recommendation already mentioned have you covered. Just think about the reason you are buying it.

And remember, "A happy wife is a happy life"!

Good luck.

It would be helpful to know what your budget is and what you photographic interest is.

I agree with threedeers. I have the D7100 with the 18-140 lens. I like it very much and find it very useable. Pretty much the right range for general shooting. Have a GREAT DAY!

I use a Sigma 18-250 lens on my D7000 and it rarely comes off. One body and one lens is enough for me. The are cheap enough also.

Nikon 28-300. For wide angle, Tamron 10-24mm or Nikon 10-24mm.
