I don't mean to hijack the thread but thought some of you might have good input on my future tripod/ballhead/gimbal combination.

I'm planning on the Gitzo GT2531EX with the Benro G2 and Induro GHBA for use with my 80-400 with the center post horizontal in a sitting position which should put the lens platform underneath instead of to the side. This would obviously change the pan to the vertical adjustment and the Induro to the horizontal adjustment. It seems this would be more like a traditional gimbal head in that configuration.

Any thoughts?.

No, my apologies as I thought you were serious.

Few of us who opinionate about this topic know the reason that plastic is "better" than glass. First is the cost of transporation - glass weighs more, especially re-usable bottles that have to be robust to withstand the handling. That's why things that must be in glass are in thin bottles.

Which leads to the problem of breakage - glass does and plastic doesn't.

We're doomed, anyway, so why sweat it?

Great attitude, I'll tell my grandchildren to just go ahead and litter because we're all doomed!. Nobody knows what is going to happen in the future. All we can control is what we do on this planet. Some care and some don't. I've seen enough to know that selfish people will never care and its up to the rest of us to stop things like this. JMHO!

Some times Nikon USA has both in stock as refurbished units. If you can do without the VR, the 2.8-4 may be the better choice. I owned a 3.5-4.5 but sold it when I acquired a 24-120 mm f/4, which I wanted for more reach. I did like the IQ of the 3.5-4.5 and wanted the VR feature which is why I selected it when I got my D610.

Mahalo,

I really like VR but at a maximum 85mm it really isn't as important as the macro capability to me. My future plan is to have the 24-85 on a D600 as I can't afford more and the 80-400 on the D7000 which gives me 600mm and never change lenses just cameras.

Mahalo for your opinion. M.M.

As it is to me also.

Yep, I own the 2.8 D and my son owns the 3.5 G and I've used both on my D610 and here's what I'll tell you:

Physical size is the same, weight: the D is about 3 oz more due to quality of build, D is made in Japan, G is made elsewhere
D is slightly faster (about 0.6 f stop) and can focus much closer,
D to 0.7 ft (half lifesize) and G to 1.25 ft. (I like and use this feature)
D has no VR and G does (not important to me at these focal lengths)
My opinion about IQ - both are about the same from my photos taken (no serious test performed by me to determine any differences)
My conclusion: based on the macro and lens speed which fit my use, I'd pick the D. If price were an important issue for you then I'm sure you'd be happy with the G.
Good luck and happy shooting. chase

Mahalo chase4,

I was thinking the same about what was most important to me. Mostly a quality walk around lens with macro as I only want two lenses and have the 80-400D 4.5-5.6 which gives me 120-600mm on my D7000.

Would also be looking for a D600, D610 or D750 for a FX body at some point for the 24-85mm.

Anyway good to hear from someone who has used both on a FX body.

Can anyone who has had experience with both of these lenses give me their opinion how they compare. Looking for a quality FX wide angle zoom.

One is $496.95 and the 2.8-4 is $741.95 at B&H. The latter can be found on EBay for $375.00 or so in great condition.

I really like the macro ability of the 2.8-4 for a walk around lens but also like VR.

Just wondering?.

I've used the 80-400G and TC14E II and at f11 in bright light it looks pretty good.

That's in manual focus right?.

Isn't there a physical issue that prevents the TC even connecting with some tele's?

The chart shows the 80-400 compatible with all three in manual focus only and the limitations on the 1.4X are because the D7000 doesn't support f/8.

Neither of N ikons 80-400mm lenses are compatible with TC's, even if they were, your D7000 will not AT with a lens/TC combo exceeding F6.3 maximum aperture.

Mahalo MT Shooter,

I think you meant they won't auto focus as the chart say's it will work with all of them in manual focus. Just thought I had heard someone say it would auto focus on my camera and wanted to make sure. Might as well go for the 1.7II and get more reach.

Nikon say's the D7000 doesn't support AF with this combination. Is this true?.

I plan to buy a Spider Hand Strap soon. It's the most expensive on all the sites but take a look at it as it doesn't cover too much of your hand making it hard to get to the controls. It also has a wrist strap for extra safety.

I just got done reading all the reviews for the three or four highest rated ones and don't feel comfortable buying any other than the Spider.

Just a thought.! Good luck

Maybe instead of a smart remark you can explain exactly what I don't get other than you and your friend have some code the rest of us aren't privy to. Is it that Oscar and Kenny don't belong on the same station.? Because you think he's a no talent hack.? I'm just wondering.?

Great pic!! As a jazz musician, I cringe when the name Kenny G is used in the context of the word, jazz!!

I love it when a so called Jazz Musician puts down another one because he doesn't like their style. Please let us all know when your next album comes out?. BTW, I've played 50 years and in a top 20 Show Band back in the day and never put down other Musician's unless they truly deserve it.

Besides they don't have enough stations it seems to separate each new type of Jazz. Maybe you can fix that for us.?
