Nikon say's the D7000 doesn't support AF with this combination. Is this true?.

Neither of N ikons 80-400mm lenses are compatible with TC's, even if they were, your D7000 will not AT with a lens/TC combo exceeding F6.3 maximum aperture.

Mahalo MT Shooter,

I think you meant they won't auto focus as the chart say's it will work with all of them in manual focus. Just thought I had heard someone say it would auto focus on my camera and wanted to make sure. Might as well go for the 1.7II and get more reach.

Isn't there a physical issue that prevents the TC even connecting with some tele's?

The chart shows the 80-400 compatible with all three in manual focus only and the limitations on the 1.4X are because the D7000 doesn't support f/8.

I've used the 80-400G and TC14E II and at f11 in bright light it looks pretty good.

In bright light, you may be able to get the 80-400G + 1.4 TC to autofocus on the D7000.
But since the D7000 autofocus doesn't support f/8 it's hit or miss.

The 80-400 D model does NOT support any Nikon Teleconverter.

The 80-500 G model does work with Nikon Teleconverters, but may not autofocus, due to the effective loss of light.

The D7100, and the D600 that I have will try to autofocus with the central focus point in such a situation.

Have been thinking of the 80-400 G VR, but.....
I still have and love my D7000, but recently purchased a D7200 which love even more. Not trying to steel this thread, but how about the D7200 with the 80-400G, will it autofocus?

With TC, It should at least make a good attempt at it.

I believe that it has the same or newer auto focus module as the D7100.

Without a TC, of course it will

Maybe you should let Nikon know they are building such a lens?
