That's a good choice. As you say, a little over budget but it is a fine selection for what he has planned.

Phil

I might add that I have a monthly subscription to Adobe and included in that is Lightroom mobile. I have it installed on my iPad and iPhone. One of its features is a camera It takes raw photos puts them into Lightroom and when connected to WiFi you will find them already on your desktop when you get home in your cloud ready for classic or photoshop editing. Plenty good for trip photos. No need to lug a camera.

Sorry to hear about your wife. But if I might suggest, do you have a smart phone? If so, just use the phone. Newer phones take great photos.

Tell your cousin to get Google Photo Scan app on his phone. Free. Take the scan on the app and to be sure to eliminate any glare ahead of time. I have been using the app for a few years. it is virtually fool proof for scanning old photos. It takes four photo and combines them all into one good one. One scan for each corner. Afterwards you can edit in the app and apply coloration such as sepia or black and white.

I think this has been answered before but I can't remember.

If I open a jpeg file and then close it is there any loss?

If so, is the loss naggable?

This is a bit off subject and is a quote from a book by D Klosterman about JPEG

“JPEG: Saving an image as a JPEG image file means that the camera takes the information that hits the sensor and processes it with all the settings that you ask the camera to use. If you have the White Balance set on Cloudy, it adjusts and processes the image to include and reflect that information. If you have the Picture Control set to Vivid, it processes the image to include that information. All of those settings have been applied and saved in your JPEG image file, and cannot be changed later. So if your combination of settings resulted in an image with very high contrast and bright but reddish colors, that is what your JPEG image will look like. The camera discarded some or much of the original information that hit the sensor when it processed and saved that JPEG, and that information is lost forever. For example, if the Picture Control you chose was one that included a high level of contrast, those subtle gradations of skin tones from light to dark were discarded during the processing and are gone, forever. Or as an extreme example, if you chose the Monochrome Picture Control, the resulting JPEG image will[…]”

My suggestion is get either Google photo scan app or Adobe scan for your phone or iPad. Adobe scan will scan anything, documents and photos. PDFs or jpgs. Google photo scanner works great too. Scan the photo to your photo album as jpg and then print. Editing can be done. I have used it to scan in dozens of old photos.

Clogging is directly related to use. Let any printer sit unused long enough and they will clog. Frequent use will eliminate most clogs. Nozzel checks and cleanings will cure most. Print something at least every other day. Just a nozzle check if nothing else.

Generally speaking. If you want to just print photos then buy a photo printer. If you want higher speed and need to print for an office and want to save money then buy an all purpose/office printer. Epson 3700 eco printer are great. You will not get "great" photo prints. Photo printers generally have multiple ink carts and are slower. Office printers usually just come with black and CYM inks. Better photo printers usually have from 8 to 12 ink cartridges. Office printers can print on 8.5 inch paper or smaller. Better photo printers can print on paper up to either 13 or 17 inch wide. I have had a canon Pro 1000 for about 5 years now. It has 12 carts and can go up to 17" wide paper and up to 47" long. 13x19 is another standard size paper. Some printers can take rolls of paper. The 1000 does not. Figure out what is the biggest/widest paper you might want to print on and go from there. The pro 1000 carts are about $60 each. They hold a lot of ink but still waste a lot due to frequent automatic cleanings. You can refill for less at from $24 to $47 (OEM ink) per cart. Stick to either epson or canon for photos. Lots of videos on photo printing on YouTube.

I use either my iPhone or iPad and use adobe document scanner. Free app if you have an adobe account. Take a picture using the app and click OK the app creates a PDF of the document. You can check that the edges are good and trim if necessary. You can also adjust color. Docs are then saved to adobe documents folder. you can share and email them as you see fit. Just a thought.

Actually a sensor registers the green grey value in all RGB through a filter THEN add another G value.

So a sensor is really recording RGBG. This is why using a uniWB vs anything else is more accurate when shooting raw. The raw results are ugly green initially but once processed? This just at another level.

Bob posted this a long time ago...

Notice if you will that there are twice as many green filters in the Bayer filter than red and blue.

Yep. Black and white. First color photos was created by a photographer taking three black and white slides with color filters R G and B. Then projecting slides on a screen and overlapping the projections with color slides of R G and B. Voila color photo.
