Are there anything to check before having to send it in for repairs. Any estimates on what it might cost? Yes I did try another card and had the same problem. Suggestions where to send it for repair if I don't get a suggestion that fixes the problem.
Look real close at the pins in the CF card slot.
You may have a bent one.
I leave mine in there and only use the SD card slot.
Check with Nikon for repair facilities nearest you

I would check the pins as the other suggested. As for repair do an estimate quote online at Nikonusa.com

Just tried - It works without the CF - unless you require the back up, you can get an estimate - if too high, a large SDHC!

I have D800s and a D810 - I have never used the CF slot. Unless you have a lot of $$$ invested in CF cards, I'd just use the SD slot. I had a CF card reader that got a bent pin, and I swore off CF cards them ever since.
Actually, this is the first time I have taken the one in the D810 out - I'm less comfortable with them than SDHC,
I used both CF and SD for years, I never had an issue. (Fuji pro SII, D300, D800e)
Now I use both XQD and SD cards. No issue either. (D500, D850)
I still have a couple of CF drives I do not know what to do with. Anyone interested can ask me on pm, no charge, not even shipping. (32GB, 8GB and another, if I can find it)
This is the best shot I could get of the pins and they look ok to me

Nope... Bottom pin, lower right is bent.

Yup!
Bent completely over & squished flat. Not sure if it's touching the pin above it or not.

You have to look at it to see it.

Yep. If you’re careful, you may be able to straighten it enough so you can reinsert the card or prevent it from touching the adjacent pin. I would use needle nose pliers to pull it up and then a small tube (something like .032 dia ID brass tubing) slipped over it to get it exactly right. Do this with the battery out. The danger as it is that it may be shorting to the adjacent pin. My guess is the cost to have it repaired is $200-$350 depending on who does the work.

I most certainly is. And, I am sorry to say, looks like it is bent flat which means it will probably break when you try to straighten it.
Time for service, and it may be difficult to find parts. I would suggest using the SD slot only.

I THiNK that’s pin 1 on the connector, and if so, you may be in luck as pin 1 is a ground and is duplicated on other pins, so if it breaks off, no problem and everything still works. What is a problem is if it touches the adjacent pin, so I would either straighten it or break it off, but I wouldn’t let it touch the adjacent pin. I had this exact thing happen on a Canon 7D, and it did break off while straightening it, but it wasn’t an issue. What I’m not sure of is how the connector is oriented on a Nikon, so not positive it’s pin 1.
