I just joined and thought I'd take advantage of the expertise out there...

In the next few weeks I'll be on a Viking River cruise visiting Prague, Budapest, Vienna, Munich, Cologne and Amsterdam. I plan to bring my Canon gear: 5D3, 5D2 (emergency spare), 16-35 f4L, 24-70 f2.8L II, 70-200 f2.8L II, 1.4 and 2.0 extenders, 430EXII flash and small Sirui tripod. For convenience, I always bring my G16 when my SLR is inappropriate. For tours, I expect to keep the 24-70 on most of the time and carry the 16-35 and flash. The 70-200 and extenders will be for shore-line castles that we'll pass.

I'm considering renting either the new Canon 11-24 UWA or Sigma 12-24 ART lens but not sure if I'll us it. Am I over-packing or forgetting something?

Thanks for your feedback.

I agree that he was too quick in pulling Hendricks, and then Lester. I am too old for this type of excitement.

I did not really know if to post this here or in the general discussions. My intention is not precisely to generate a discussion but to show others what we can do today through the technology that is available to us.
At the turn of the century we were having all kind of difficulties to convert images to b&w. I have spent many years in the optical darkroom making b&w photographs from my negatives but I was so frustrated by the so called conversions at the time that I quit making b&w photographs entirely. That did not do me any good and I lost my "touch" for making good b&w images, at least good for my taste.
As the years went by and technology improved software companies began to offer programs capable of making easier and better b&w images from conversions. I tried Topaz B&W Effects and I liked it although it was evident that besides not using the program to its full potential due to inexperience and having lost my "touch" for monochrome images after several years of neglect I was not achieving the tonalities I was used to. Useless to say that these softwares have plenty of presets and parameters to work with tonalities and do with the digital files what we could not possibly dream of in an optical darkroom.
Nik is another company, among others, that has an excellent program for conversions and in these images I used both softwares from Topaz and Nik to produce these results. I am biased to Topaz perhaps because I know it better but both are excellent conversion softwares.
The images I am posting here were selected at random from my files. In each of them I edited as per my taste, which has changed over the years. I do not like now my pictures with the contrast I used to use when I was working in the optical darkroom. Manipulating individually shadows, highlights and middle tones is a godsend we could not easily do in the darkroom. The frames are incorporated with the softwares and I used them as an added bonus. Many b&w photographers use contrast very successfully and indeed good b&w images in general will need a bit of contrast, depending on taste and creativity.
Each picture has some warmth added, perhaps because I got so used to using Agfa fiber base paper in the past for my prints.. Using filters with these softwares during editing is another godsend since we can now see the effects of the filter and decide if that is what we want and obviously, the strength of the filter can be varied, at least with Topaz. Films of the past can be selected showing their rendition of the file for us to make a decision.
Useless to say that these digital conversions with software when printed by a good professional lab look as good as the real thing.
