I've done lots of traveling by car, train, plane, and ship. I've had enough. Now I limit my trips to sightseeing on TV and short local trips.
A friend and her sister drove from NY to VA yesterday to visit relatives and see a Von Trapp Family concert. Here's what happened -
A rock hit the rental car window, huge crack.
They stopped for gas but couldn't find the release for the gas-filler door. While they were at the pump, a man had a heart attack. EMTs arrived and worked on him for half an hour then took him away. His wife was very upset.
An accident shut down I-95 south 30 miles before the Chesapeake Bay, so they had to detour and lose a lot of time. Her sister developed a migraine, so my friend had to take over the driving. Driving through DC was not the best part of her trip.
When they finally arrived at the hotel and checked into their room, they found that it was already occupied. They got a room upgrade. Another nice feature of the trip, it was 97 and humid.
I look forward to hearing what went wrong at the concert.

Bummer - hope the rest of the trip goes better...
And it wasn't even the 13th...
Sounds like a long series of unfortunate circumstances...

Try taking a trip with kids. That's the answer to "how much worse could it get?"
Sounds like it was "one of those days."
i'm 77 and concerned about emergency's. I no longer have a reliable traveling companion.

Reminds me of a trip to Chillicothe, Mo, With my Ex and two of my daughters quite a few years back . The hood latch broke at about 65 mph, wrapped the hood over the top of the car, got stopped without wrecking the car, closed the hood, couldn't see over it. was gonna take it off , storm coming, jumped up and down on the hood, and wired it to the bumper, windshield was a mess, drove about 45 miles with head out window, arrived at our destination, the stotn just missed us, found a local glass shop to replace windshield and wipers for what the insurance would pay( just love small towns)
Met a guy at the convention that had a car the same model and color as ours, bought the car $150 got headed home stopped for gas, locking gas cap, no key hour later managed to tear the cap off, 165 miles and 24qts of oil later we were home, the rest of the weekend was fixing the car so the EX could use if for work Monday. Those were the good old days LOL

I agree. I'm going on 79 and I've got my airline ticket to Iran and three weeks after my return (?) I've got my ticket to Japan. Next spring it's Spain and Portugal and the winter after it's Argentina and Chile. If I'm still functioning I'll hit Ethiopia after that. I want to die broke.
WHY I STILL DO: Seeing the Grand Canyon for the first time. Watching a coyote hunt in Yellowstone. Being stuck in a FL rainstorm so heavy I couldn't see the front of my car. Alpenglow. Preservation Hall, taking a cable operated river ferry in NC and an Independence Day parade in "small town" America. Wall Drug. Seeing signs for an RV and motor home museum in Indiana. Being the only person in St Peter's Square, tasting the best biscuit I've ever eaten in my life in Cooke City MT. Meeting relatives I didn't know I had and being with Brothers I served with for the first time in fifty years. Coming home.

We drive NYC to just south of DC frequently, 95 can be a pain, all routes have a bad spot but we have one that is usually not too bad, ask next time, Bob.

The mystery gas cap - I had that happen one time with a rental car! Now I never leave the lot without knowing how to open the gas compartment! Pretty embarrassing and awkward for what always turns out to be simple....
