The best camera in the world is always that which is most reliable and gives you the pictures you like. Discussing Canon vs Nikon is time wasted that could be used to take better pictures. CLICK!

Hi all,

I'm an experienced sports and nature photographer but I've just had a request to do some female body builder shots with which I have zero experience. If anyone has experience with this type of photography I'd appreciate some tips. Captain C - I did see the teen body builder shots you did of 2 teenage boys - phenomenal work as always. I don't have $1000's worth of lighting equipment but these will be done in a pretty well lit gym, not a studio. I do have some softboxes, an SB910, SB600 and a couple of reflectors plus a background to take. I'll be shooting with Nikon D500 and probably my 24-70 2.8 lens. I also have 35-50 and 85 1.8's.

Other search results only gave me a couple of off color jokes. Not offended but not helpful either. lol

My trial session with her is on Sunday.

Thanks,
Donna
Hi all, br br I'm an experienced sports and natur... (show quote)

MY QUICK suggestions are (1) ask her to show you some photos of herself or others that she liked. Then try to equal or surpass what she likes. use side light for definition. Second quick suggestion is find some body building mag and look at good photos. A well known photog of my aquaintance some times brings torn out pages to show his models what he wants. Your model probably cares only about how good your photos are and not how "original". ((Is anything really original??))

Suggest to the bride and groom that they hire a photographer.

Please ignore the unhelpful suggestion above. And don't let it discourage you.

Side bar: when airplanes started flying around, the farmers brought lawsuits against the planes flying over their fields. They argued "I own that property from Heaven all the way down to Hell." But that didn't work, did it?

I really feel sorry for Tiger Woods. For a while he was on top of the world and then all that money (and women) was too much for him. Like Thoreau said, "having money you don't really need makes you spend it on things you don't really need." (paraphrased)

I have a nikkor 18-300 f/3.5~6.3 (6.3 is 1/3 f/stop less than f/5.6 and much lighter.) With Sigma 8~16 I went transcontinental and did great on Amtrak (in 2014) Orlando to Jacksonville to DC tp Chicago to Space Needle to San Francisco to Denver and back to Jacksonville and then then home to Ocala, FL and only could have wished for a micro nikkor for extreme close ups and otherwise did fine. Main thing is I didn't break my back. You should do just as well with 18-200. Have decided to add the new Nikkor 10-20 zoom ($309) to my D5600 and drop the Sigma on next trip. I had the 18-200 and it was great but the 18-300 added a little reach -- could have done without it and traveled even lighter. David Jenrette

Almost any good wide angle will do, but keep it light. No 14~24mm zoom!

If you are buying a uv filter for protecting your lens, then you have a case for getting one, but if you are concerned about UV light, don't worry about it. Modern coated glass and air popllution lets very little UV light through. Unless you are on Mt Everest, of course.

Welcome!

I lived in Miami until 2003. Is the Camera Clinic still in business? Do you know a decent camera repair facility in or around Miami?

no significant difference.

If there were, then this discussion would have ended many years ago.

The dangers of getting poor UV filters are way over rated. Do these simple tests and avoid worries:

1. Put the UV filter on a piece of fine graph paper (office depot) and twist and move it around. Do you see any distortions?

2. Let a beam of sunlight hit your UV filter and reflect the image on the wall (like a mirror). Then flip it over and do it again. Do you see any distorted images?

If your answers are NO and NO, then you have no problems.

Cleaning and/or replacing a filter is much better than doing the same thing to a valuable lens. And some people spend a lot of time cleaning their lenses -- if you buy a used lenses, look closely for cleaning marks.

If you want a long lens, Nikon's newest 200-500mm at about $1400 sounds like a perfect match with your other lenses.
