Traded all my Canon gear today for Nikon gear. Went from Canon 1ds and 7D to Nikon D3 I wanted better low light and fast frame rate. I went to mpd and got a good deal on a low shutter count D3 and a couple of lens, I like doing business with them they seem fair. I looked at the D810 but I don't print large prints and never shoot video mostly post online and 8x10 prints at the most. I like shooting wildlife, sports and some macro.

Who still use this camera and what do you think about the picture quality?

You understand, of course, the Nikon D3 is a 12MP professional-grade full frame DSLR announced by Nikon in August 2007? Assuming you meant the original EOS 1Ds, that was a full-frame 11MP DSLR released in September 2002. Current top technology from Nikon (D5) sports 21MP at 12 fps and Canon with their 1DXII comes at 20MP and 14 fps. Given your expressed interest in a D810, it would seem you could have realized more benefits by going more modern in your selection of equipment ....

Interesting. You already made the change and now your asking about the quality? One would hope you did you homework before the change. I would suspect nikon fans will say good move, Canon not so good, and mirrorless fans wondering why you going backwards.

Good luck and I hope it all pans out!

I have the D3 and still use it. I also have the 810 and 500 and those do get most of the use, but for corporate headshot work or any sessions I know will not be printed larger than 12x18 or need significant cropping, the D3 is the bomb. I have made great 16x20 prints too.

Hi ISO files are superb and skin tones are excellent. For an 11x14, one could not tell the difference between the D3 and the D810. It is STILL an excellent camera - one of the best Nikon has ever made. Sure, newer cameras have more features, but for image quality, the D3 is up there with the best.

Gary, seriously, what did you pay for the D3? And you'll need a few lenses!
This last spring I purchased a used Canon 1Dx mkl for $1750.
You could have sold the 7D for $400 or more and the 1ds for maybe $750 or more. You would have to kick in maybe $800 and your lenses would already be covered.
That now ancient D3 doesn't make any sense to me!!! Good luck!

I was just want peoples input on their experiences on the D3. I did do my homework on the camera and its all I need, the D810 was to much camera Plus I did not need video cause I never use it so its a waste. Plus I did not want to spend the money on a more expensive camera when Mostly all I do is post picture on the internet for fun.

I did the homework that is why I went with the D3 the D810 was to much of a camera for me plus the cost was more then I wanted to spend. I was just trying to see how D3 user felt about their camera. I don't make a living with a camera I just like having fun and learning how to take better pictures.

It was your decision to make & you had your reasons after consideration. Good enough. Have fun. Merry Christmas.

Oh, this is not flack - just an observation. When the D3 came out in late 2007, it blew away every Canon out there. This was not MY opinion, but the opinion of my Canon friends. One response was, "Yeah so what, who is going to shoot at ISO 3200 or 6400 anyway?" Certainly Canon stopped up their game, but at the time, the D3 was far and away the best available. Competition is good.

I still have some Canon shooter friends who wonder why Canon has not caught up with Nikon in several areas—dynamic range being the most common wish. Looks like Canon is putting most of their development dollars (Yen?) into the video market. THERE, they have fantastic products.

For the OP's use, the D3 sounds like a good choice. If I am still selling (gorgeous) images with mine, how far wrong could he go?

This thread is all kinds of absurd, sadly, not surprising. This has to be the most illogical change of gear Ive ever read about....

I made the same switch over 2 years ago and have NEVER been happier! The better color was worth the switch by itself. The greater dynamic range and hugely better high ISO capability also helped the decision. But the greatest satisfaction is in the faster, more accurate autofocus. I was so sick of the Canons constantly searching for focus I almost went mirrorless, but am very glad I didn't and decided on Nikon. It was a hit trading in my L lenses but I don't miss any of them AT ALL! I now have both Nikon and Tamron lenses and all work perfectly.
You won't regret your decision.

I love reading the whining from the Canon pundits who are appalled at one of their compatriates switching to better gear. Its hilarious!!!!!

More accurate focus? Oh, really..... First time I hear such nonsense. The most logical reason for the change are mostly due to the better dynamic range of Nikon sensors, but AF?? LOL!! The AF system of the 7D2 is super fast and accurate. You have image examples of how your images improved with the change?
