My wife and I will be traveling to Nova Scotia next month. Does anyone have any favorite photo op sites or undiscovered, out-of-the-way gems? Also: is Prince Edward Island worth extending the trip? We'd love to hear about your experiences. Thanks.

We spent 10 days last June driving through Cape Brenton & Nova Scotia and the top highlight of our trip was the puffin tour with Donelda and her husband. It's an unforgettable experience and you are guaranteed to see puffins, eagles and tons more. The eagles know the sound of her boat engines and her voice over the loud speaker. They fly over the boat waiting for her to throw them a fish. You can track their dives into the water right in front of you! Plenty of photo opportunities. You won't be disappointed. http://puffinboattours.com. The best place we stayed for 3 nights was in Cape Brenton in our own air conditioned cottage right on the ocean's edge. Great photo opps, unbelievable breakfasts and gourmet dinners right here. http://seascapecoastalretreat.com. Easy to stay here and explore the Cabot Trail. There is a goat farm just down the road from the cottage. Spend some time there with your camera as well. Need more suggestions, just send me an email.

Very recently - probably in the past 10 days - there was an interesting instructional piece on creating line drawings in Photoshop. I lost it, and I'm stuffed if I can find it in any of the approved ways, so I'm throwing myself on the kindness of UHH members. Can anyone help, please?
Cheers
Jim

Thanks Bob, I'll use Scott Kelby's list. The newsletter with 5 tips from G Brown was informative. Photographer Jim's thoughtful comments, especially about the booth shot was really helpful. And thanks to all the other responders. It's really competitive to get into these shows and every little bit of info helps. BTW, once you're juried in, you can sell all those Elvis and dog velvet paintings you'd like. There's a buyer for everything. Thanks again everyone.

I would expect the festival to have its list of taboo subjects. If it were me, I would avoid anything that could repel the general public. Exhibiting in a gallery is totally different from show images at a craft fair. You'll mom and pop, and the grandchildren looking at them.

The list I'm referring to was from an "inside the jury process" person and it pertained to all juried art festivals. He was being specific to photographers. A jury will bypass the whole application if one of the "taboo" (i.e. a cat/dog) subjects is submitted, no matter how the rest of the work looks. Another was photos with text.

I vaguely remember an article about which photographed subjects NOT to submit for consideration into juried arts/crafts festival applications, but I don't remember most of them. Pets and nudity come to mind, but does anyone else remember any others?

I'm sure this has been asked many times before, but here goes.
Does anyone have any suggestions on an easy to understand Instruction Manual for this program?

I see some video tutorials, but i'm just a little too slow to follow them like i should to use them. I can't really retain what i watch like i should. I need something that i can take my time with and go back to if i need to.

Thanks,
Tom

Tom, check out this link to www.Lynda.com. There are 42 tutorials that pertain to Elements 12. http://www.lynda.com/search?q=photoshop+Elements+12&f=producttypeid%3a2%094%3bmeta_software_facet%3aPhotoshop+Elements
These are videos, but you can follow along reading the text that runs with it too. Nice thing is that you can sign up for a 1 month 24/7 training plan for $25.00. I actually signed up for their free 1 week trial plan, and then switched into the 1 month plan. 5 weeks of tutorials for $25.00! You have total control of the videos. You can stop and start the videos any time and take your own notes or copy the written transcript and refer back to it later while watching the video again and again taking notes. They have a whole range of classes that are easy to follow and understand.
If it helps, I find that the best way to learn from a video tutorial is to watch it through maybe a couple of times 1st without taking notes and worrying about catching everything. The 3rd time through I also open the program I'm trying to learn and follow along with the video. Last time through I'll print out the transcript that comes with the video and add my own notes as I follow along so I can refer back at a later date.
Good group of instructors and students at Lynda.com. You can always submit inquiries and get helpful answers back.

We just got 2 new feet of beautiful snow and the temps are hovering near 0 with the windchill at -20 below. It looks like a snow globe and pure paradise! I have a Pentax K-5 specifically for this reason. It's a work-horse camera that can handle all sorts of extreme weather.

I decided to try BBF today after seeing this topic the other day on the forum. I use a Pentax K-5 usually set on continuous to help insure that I get a good shot (which doesn't always work). I went to the beach to practice and captured waves crashing over the ice encrusted wall. I was able to lock in on my focal point and then recompose, which forced me to think more about the composition and capture even better shots as the day progressed. After a short while, it felt more natural to use this method and I felt much more in control. I just downloaded the photos and then compared them to my practice shoot from yesterday. There is not one blurred photo within the pix I took today. The focus is exactly where I wanted it in each and every photo. I can't say that about the shots taken yesterday or any other session. I can't wait to go out and practice some more, but as of right now, I'm a convert and I expect to leave my camera set to BBF. Thank you Hedgehogs for again teaching me something new.

My Epson R2400 is giving up the ghost and I am thinking of getting a new printer. I need A+ size capability (13x19) so choices are limited---and expensive.

I am considering another Epson, the R3000, which has a $250 rebate right now.

Any other suggestions out there?

Thanks

I recently killed my Epson R1900 after 4 hard years of use. I replaced it with the Epson R3000. I called Epson and they had me join their "Loyalty Program". I got a really good discount and the rebate. The ink costs went up dramatically compared to the R1900, but Epson says the R3000 will yield 50% more prints. I really loved the print quality of the R1900. The print colors are outstanding on the R3000 and I'm more than pleased with the results.

I use Utrecht now merged with Blick art Materials. I have also used Frames By Mail - quality metal frames and excellent service. Here in Sacramento, we have a store called Tap Plastic. They sell acrylic for frames- cut to size while you wait. Check your area for stores that specialize in plastic products.

Thank you for the source and the suggestion.
