I look forward to reading this forum every day because you're usually all so helpful (some days a few are a bit cranky), informative and very interesting. Now I need some help. I sell my photography at art/crafts shows and I'm trying to keep the cost down by framing them myself. I'm looking for suppliers of metal picture frame molding (wholesale or not) that I can cut myself, as well as a supplier of cut to size glass and acrylic. Anyone else out there making their own frames?
Hobby lobby sells metal stripping that you can put together in the sizes you need.
A friend who's in the matting and framing biz orders all his supplies from Dick Blick.

I haven't looked but Amazon.com should be a resource.

I also sell my work at festivals out here on the west coast. I use Valley Moulding And Frame for my framing supplies. Good prices, but only wholesale. They are definitely the type of supplier you are looking for. They have four west coast distribution points, but my understanding is that they operate in the East under a different name. You could call them and see what they might be able to do for you. Here is a link to their home page. You can get a phone number from the contacts page. Hope this helps, and good luck on the circuit.

Thank you for the info. I checked them out and they do seem less expensive when I quickly compared notes. I will study them more closely after this weekend's show.

Thank you, Photographer Jim. I will definitely contact them. Thanks for the luck and all the best to you too.

hobby/craft houses have these aluminuminiminim (sp?) frames.
Michaels and AC Moore come to mind.
Google CRAFT STOES in your area
American Frame is good.
Don't buy from Light Impressions they have become a nightmare for any business arrangements.
So does Aaron Brothers, a large art store chain. Artist Supply stores probably will have raw lengths of metal frame, ready to be cut, and may even cut it for you. In like manner, the supply store might have bulk 1/8" framing glass and cutting service. Good luck!

A friend has an art gallery, and he's been using this place for years.

I think you would be quite pleased with Frame Fit Co. (
www.framefit.com) Been dealing there for years, never disappointed. Much better pricing than the craft stores, by a mile.
I'm curious why you prefer to cut your own? I'm sure you work to standard sizes, no? There are guidelines as to print size/mat size/frame size. Following them may make things easier for your customers if, down the road, they decide to re-frame.
BTW, FF has good prices on mats and foam board, too. Buy quantities--they're not banannas and won't rot!
Best,
Terry
I use Utrecht now merged with Blick art Materials. I have also used Frames By Mail - quality metal frames and excellent service. Here in Sacramento, we have a store called Tap Plastic. They sell acrylic for frames- cut to size while you wait. Check your area for stores that specialize in plastic products.
