Hi, I'm just beginning to delve into the world of flash and would love any recommendations on articles that might be helpful. One thing that I have a hard time understanding is how to take a reading? I imagine that the burst of light is giving me additional light, so if I expose for the ambient light (given I can even get a good reading without blowing the iso out of the water? And, what about auto focus if it's dark?), how to make the adjustment for the flash? Maybe I'm supposed to use program mode, tV, av and let the camera make decisions for flash?
Yikes! I really am a beginner, aren't I?

No one should ever use the crutch of automatic, to try to learn anything about camera settings, and exposure.

To start with proper exposure has nothing to do with learning settings, but how to apply them. That is only learned by studying things like light and shadow, exposure, and other boring things like that. There is no shortcut, or magic set of numbers that will do it. :)

And I am sure your first camera was full fledged manual!
Hmmm! no magic set of numbers, guess there goes the rule of 16 :(

I have used it for a while, no complaints other than it will not do a batch re-size.

All you pros out there would you mind giving me a little advice. My brother has offered to sell me his 5D mk ii body which he won for a nominal price. I have a newer 7d. The question is; Is the 5D that much better a camera than the 7D and what are its disadvantages from the 7d.

When I try to capture the beauty of green trees
and a vivid blue sky the color in the photos
never gets close to what I see with my eyes.
Why is there such a discrepancy?

There are many variables when shooting pictures outdoors and many of us has had to learn to compensate for them by the use of white balance and filters such as CP or graduated filters.
For sure you are not alone in this don't be afraid to experiment and try new things you have much to gain and little to loose.

Perhaps a simple flash diffuser and reflector(s) would give you the results that you are looking for.

I was wondering if professional photographers hire apprentices. I'd love to work a few hours a week and help out at special events or assignments to learn from an expert. I'm too old to go to school and put up with instructors who really never made it in the real world.

I teach a 4-H photography class so I always have more than enough volunteers for projects.
Many of times the students become my teacher so it works out very well.

Be cautious as Cokin is a name brand many of the filters or holders may read "filters for cokin P series" or Filters for cokin p series holder"
The holders that is not cokin or stamped cokin is very weak and tend to crack easily.
The filters that are not cokin is thin and warp very easily especially in this heat that we have been having.
be sure that what you get is genuine "cokin" the filter holder is stamped cokin on the top.
I have used cokin products for years.

Would you rather be 15 for the rest of your life, or 64 for the rest of your life? Personally, I think I'd go for 15.

Would rather be 64 that way I could enjoy the senior citizens discounts and perks, to hard to be 15 would always have to show an id to do anything, besides would not want to be in the 10th grade the rest of my life... ugh!

I had PSE9 on my old computer. I lost the disks and can't load it on my new computer. Talked to Adobe and even though I'm registered, they said that they don't have a download for PSE9 because its discont. I have to buy an upgraded version. Trying to avoid that if possible. Any suggestions or should I just bite the bullet?

Also on my old computer everytime I went to UHH, I was always logged in. Now I have to log in everytime and I don't get my forum responses. Is it a setting here or maybe Google? I'm on gmail.
