Can any explain what histograms are and what the purpose is?

It's a graph showing the levels of brightness in a photo. It goes from 0 (black) on the left to white (255) on the right. The higher the vertical lines are, the more of that value in the photo.

They are very useful for judging your exposure. Although there is no "correct" histogram chart, you want to avoid having everything bunched up at either end.

|\____ A dark photo or scene - possibly under exposed.

____/| A light photo or scene - possibly over exposed

__/\_ A scene with more even light - likely a proper exposure.
