Just got my Nikon D850 plus two lenses...the Nikkor AF-S VR Micro 105 f/2.8 and the Nikkor lens AF-S 24 - 70 F/2.8E ED VR

Someone in the group said the 24 - 70 was a beast...she was right.

My questions is this...since it is rather heavy do I really need this lens to be my "go to" lens? Is there another lens that would also work?

I am an professional artist (painter) that loves to take images of her dogs and the Taos, NM countryside. (The Micro will be to take images of my work plus my students work.)

I have to say this group is not only realllllly wonderful but you are a hoot! I love this group of photographers and I trust your advice.

I wouldn't dare post an image of one of my photographs as you guys are way too good...maybe after I learn about the D850.

I have the 24-70 2.8 Tamron and the 24-120 f/4 Nikon. I use the 24-120 for a walk about lens. But I do love the 24-70 for all my photo jobs such as weddings.

A quick show of hands please. How many photographers here are also musicians? I find it interesting that so many people who are "artistic" often are so in more than one discipline. Ansel Adams was also a classically trained pianist, you have Ralph Gibson, and more recently people like Brian Adams, Nikki Sixx (no joke!), and Graham Nash. All are well known musicians and are also Photogs. My father was a photographer and jazz drummer who must have rubbed off on me because I'm also a musician in addition to being a photographer. My eldest son, who plays multiple instruments, also has a keen eye for photography.
I'm sure that there have been many studies on this, but I'm just wondering how many in our little community practice both arts.

I have a degree in music and have played most of my life. I also make part of my living as a photographer. I have also noticed that there seems to be a correlation between music and photography.

Which is the best Macro lens for the price for a Nikon mount.

I have the Nikkor Micro 105 2.8 and wouldn't part with it at any price. You get what you pay for.

I have been using the nikon 18/200mm dx vr lens, but the
sharpness is just not giving me that almost perfection look.
What lens, which is not too overpriced, could be recommended?

I would suggest the 24-120 f/4.
Won't break the bank and is very good.
It is an FX lens also so will be great on a D700.

I shoot in A 50%, S 10% and manual 40% of the time. Just depends on what the situation calls for. My suggestion is learn them all. You never know when you might need something a little different. Oh, auto never.

I'd encourage a look at the 17-55 f/2.8. One of the best for DX.

👌👌👌 Awesome lens!

I'd have it calibrated professionally. I have it done for about $30 and I get a printed copy of the results.

David

Do you send your camera and lens off together or do you have someone local? Just curious what is the process for the professional calibration.

Thanks for your help,

Tom

There's a lot of variation in the AF accuracy of camera and lens combinations. I test the daylights out of my lenses, lenses I rent, and DSLR bodies using a DataColor SpyderLensCal. I rented the Tamron 45mm f/1.8 lens once. It needed -12 AF fine tuning on my Nikon DSLR bodies. I later took a chance and purchased a new one from B&H. I lucked out. That one only requires -3 AF fine tuning on the same cameras. The camera bodies are part of this as well. I had read that a small number of Nikon D7000 cameras has a severe back focusing issue. I had one of those. I had to set the AF fine tuning to about -15 with all lenses. I returned that one and purchased another one from a different company. The AF sensors must be calibrated much more accurately in that one. Only small amounts of AF fine tuning are needed.

I am curious, I own Data Color Snyder 5 - is the lens calibration part of that program or a separate program?
Thanks,

I wanted to thank everyone for the reply and the help. That saved me a lot of time. I tried both methods and they both work great. I took what Steve suggested in Custom F2 and now have it in my menu. This is a great community of photographers.
Cheers!

I wanted to ask if anyone could tell me if the D500 can be set up to check an image at 100% with one push of a button. I can not seem to find that. My D750 does that and it is very helpful for checking sharpness. Right now it goes to about 70% and you have to hit another once or twice to get to 100%. Thanks for your help.

Well, SS, you did it! Look how long the thread is. My 2 cents worth - Long live Nikon!! I have a D750, D500 and a D7000 and several older models in both film and digital. They have served me well. For me the whole Canon - Nikon thing is like Ford and Chevy. Both have good products and both copy each other and others. It is really how humans progress by learning from others. Anyway, Happy New Year Hogs and whatever you shoot - Keep shooting!
Cheers!

I am sure by this point most of the points have been made but here is what and why I bought both the D750 and a D500. For me they do different specific things. Oh and the cost - two bodies and still 2.5K below the D5. Now that is not to say the D5 isn't the marvel that it is - I just chose this path. D750 is for landscapes, portraits and stills (not suggesting it can't do a whole lot more). D500 for sports, action and reach (not suggesting it can't do a whole lot more). I have been very happy with both bodies or different reasons. They are absolute technological marvels. So which ever way you go - or perhaps both - enjoy!!
Happy New Year Hogs!

I have the D750 and must say it is absolutely awesome. It has been said that the 750 is probably one of Nikons best to date. I have the D500 on the way and think the two will cover all my needs. Good luck in your quest.

If I didn't already have the 70-200 f/2.8 VRll, I would maybe consider it but with the one I have there is no need. It performs flawlessly.

I don't think of HSS as a last resort.
It's a tool in your toolbox you should know how to use.

Thanks so much! I am going to try it!
