Just got my Nikon D850 plus two lenses...the Nikkor AF-S VR Micro 105 f/2.8 and the Nikkor lens AF-S 24 - 70 F/2.8E ED VR

Someone in the group said the 24 - 70 was a beast...she was right.

My questions is this...since it is rather heavy do I really need this lens to be my "go to" lens? Is there another lens that would also work?

I am an professional artist (painter) that loves to take images of her dogs and the Taos, NM countryside. (The Micro will be to take images of my work plus my students work.)

I have to say this group is not only realllllly wonderful but you are a hoot! I love this group of photographers and I trust your advice.

I wouldn't dare post an image of one of my photographs as you guys are way too good...maybe after I learn about the D850.

I have a different system but my most used and liked lens is the equivalent of your 24-70. If too heavy, either a 35mm or 50mm prime would be my suggestion.

It is so big and heavy because it is an f/2.8. A slower f/4 or a variable for use in daylight will be smaller and lighter. That 24-70 f/2.8 will be great for low light, interiors etc.
I use a 24-105 F/4 on my Canon 5DIV (on a 6D before that) for a "walk around" lens. I have gone all day at car shows etc with just that lens. My wife has an APS-C body and uses an 18-135 f/3.5-5.6 that is even smaller and lighter. Nikon makes those same types and Tamron&Sigma make that type with Nikon mounts. for those sweeping NM landscapes, canyons, mountains etc you might also want a wider prime, I use a 14 mm f/2.8 from Samyang, mine is manual focus but they now make it in AF.

It's not so much as needing a lens to be your go-to lens. Normally your "go-to" or "walk-around" lens would be your favorite of the lenses you have, not someone else's. However, if you don't have many lenses, suggestions from others may help you decide on another lens.

I agree with tdekany and Robert. I have the 24~70 f/2.8 but also a 28~80 f/3.5-4.5. If I'm going to be in a relatively crowded area I'll take the 28~80 due to its smaller size. For me, weight isn't a photographic feature of a camera or lens. Sometimes size is.

Keep the lens. It only weighs 2.35 lb / 1070 g. That beast will enable you to create some awesome images. Lift weights for endurance.Welcome to the forum.

The Nikon 24-70 is a beast. As others have said, it's not about what others saying it needs to be your go to, but you'll find that it's the one you will go to. You could go to a local camera store and check out other brands version of the same thing. I'm running Tamron's 24-75 f2.8 on my D7100 (DX body) and it's small and light. It basically lives on my camera.

Not everyone's walk around lens needs to be that 24-70. For me the Nikkor 35-70 2.8 is much nicer to use and carry as a walk around.

Give the AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR lens a look.

The 24-70 f2.8 lenses offer benefits over other options, especially on a camera like the D850. Here are a couple of suggestions that might help...

Add a battery grip to your D850. This adds a little weight, but greatly improves the "handlability" of the camera and lens. I find the benefit about the equivalent of reducing the lens weight by half.

Swap your 24-70 for the non-VR model. It will be slightly smaller and slightly lighter.

Or do both. I've not owned the VR model of this lens, but have used the non-VR on a D850 with a grip for several months. The combination is very comfortable and maneuverable, and there is a lot less fatigue. Stability is good enough that I do not miss VR at all, even on the D850. I'm sure that the grip would also help significantly if you keep the lens you have.

Just some thoughts for consideration...

I'm one of those who had a 24-70 Nikkor f2.8 but found the focal length too limited for the weight so I sold it.70mm is not that much more than 50 so I felt it was only useful on the short end. I have an 18-35 f3.5-4, a 50 f1.4 D lens, an 80 f 1.8 and a 70-200 and have just added a 200-500. For walking around I either go to the 50f1.4 on my Df or my D5300 with its 16-80 f2.8-4. For the 850 I would guess that a 50 f1.8 or a 35 f1.8 would do for a good walk around combination.

THe D850 and a Nikkor 24-70 is an ideal pairing. As to heavy, once you get used to it, the D850 is not really that heavy when compared to other fully featured full frame DSLRs, I tromp all over the west with mine. I can take bad pictures, and do all the time. But, I cannot envision a situation where the D850 will not perform.

After a while, the 24-70 will not seem so heavy.

I do a lot of wildlife photography, which makes my "go to" lens or what others refer to as a "walkaround" lens a 150-600 mm Sigma Sport. I wouldn't dream of compromising my photographic opportunities by getting something lighter that would either not be long enough or not provide the image quality I get with this lens on a D810. At 8.5 lbs is it not light, but it is still pretty manageable.

So I would suggest you try it for a while and see how it works for you.

I'm not fabulous but that never stopped me from giving advice. I have your setup. Keep the 24-70 on the camera and you will never second guess your images.
