On my Nikon D750 I use a Sima 150-600mm lens as my go to. Use what works for you!
I have an Nikon 80-400 on a Nikon D200 and a Nikon 55-300 on a Nikon D200 and a Nikon 18-55 on a D5000. It all depends on what you are going to use it for.

Well you won't be able to blame bad results on that camera. LOL Good luck

Someone in the group said the 24 - 70 was a beast...she was right.

My questions is this...since it is rather heavy do I really need this lens to be my "go to" lens? Is there another lens that would also work?

I am an professional artist (painter) that loves to take images of her dogs and the Taos, NM countryside. (The Micro will be to take images of my work plus my students work.)

I have to say this group is not only realllllly wonderful but you are a hoot! I love this group of photographers and I trust your advice.

I wouldn't dare post an image of one of my photographs as you guys are way too good...maybe after I learn about the D850.

Be careful here, some will suggest a lens they use while not owning a D850.
The 24-70 is tops and should be used when comfortable.
A good prime is also nice and fun.
A prime can be limiting in zoom but can expand your creativity.
I would recommend Nikon 85MM f1.8 (Used Mint $350-$400) since it will not overlap what you have.
Also I love the Voigtlander Ultron 40mm f/2 SL IIS Aspherical Lens for Nikon F on my D850.

Congratulations! You have one of the best cameras on the market and a couple of really good lenses. Both the 105G and 24-70 are excellent. Good walking around lens is the Nikon 24-120 f/4. You might also acquire a 50mm f/1.8 as is very sharp and extremely light. In your future you will possibly enjoy a 70-200 f/2.8 FL - especially for animals. Have fun.

I hear you about the weight. With the D850 I changed how I carried my camera, moving from around my neck to crossbody using a Peak Design strap. Carrying crossbody made a big difference for me. I no longer mind walking around with the 24-70 E2.8 or 70-200 E2.8. Others I know purchased a harness system. You can move to a prime lens like the 24 1.8, 28 1.8 or 35 1.8 depending on your shooting style. They get great reviews and are lighter and less expensive than the f1.4 versions.

Nikon makes the full frame 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 VR which weighs 460 grams as opposed to 1,067 grams for the AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR. Of course, you lose that large f/2.8 max. aperture and it does have significant distortion that you would probably want to correct.

Some UHH members suggested a prime lens. Prime lenses are great. Tamron's new SP series prime lenses all have stabilization. They also have a metal lens barrel and are fully weather sealed. I purchased the 45mm f/1.8 SP VC lens that I use on my D750. The combination of the vibration compensation and f/1.8 aperture make it a great low light lens.

CO has a point. The 24-85mm he suggests is much lighter with more reach. What you lose is speed (f/2.8 vs f/3.5 at 24mm). If you feel the need for more speed, Nikon also markets a 24-85mm f/2.8-4D in FX. It is only 4.5oz heavier but gets you back to f/2.8.

Keep the 24-70. The more you use it, the more you will realize how good and versatile it can be.

Yes, the 24-70 on the D850 body is a heavy combo. Unlike others who will say the D850 must be mounted with the best Nikon lenses to maximize IQ, I disagree, I have found the D850 ENHANCES the lens, in other words, the D850 improves any lens you put on it.
If you want a lighter zoom they are available. BUT, I would suggest a Nikon 1.8 prime. The new 1.8 primes include, 20,24,28,35,50, and 85. My favorites out of this group of fine lenses are the 28mm and the 85mm.
If you are looking for a light zoom I would suggest the Nikon 24-85 f3.5-4.5, it is a FX lens and comes in at 1.02 lbs. vs. the 24-70 at almost 2 lbs. It is also has a little more range than the 24-70
If it were me I would go with a prime 1.8, they are light and sharp. You would not be disappointed.

You have received excellent advise already but I will add my 2 cents.

The 24-70 f2.8 is a professional lens that will reward you with excellent images if you do your part. Yes, it is heavy but it has superb optics that professionals use in their work all the time and wedding photographers come to mind.
There are many lenses that you can use and the 24-120 comes to mind. Tamron, if you prefer to go that way, has an excellent 28-75 f2.8 that is lighter and very sharp.

Your 105 f2.8 is also an excellent optics and will serve you well.

The 24-70mm lens is almost worshiped by many photographers. I had one and sold it. Aside from the size and weight, I couldn't justify walking around with a lens that cost over $2,000, when others seemed to work just as well. The 24-70mm does have advantages over other lenses, but I've found that I get by just fine without one. My 28-300mm is my go-to lens.

I have the same lens and have the same issue. However, I would not give it up for those special times I really need the great quality and the 2.8 for such occasions. My general go to lens is the 16-80 f2.8-4E ED VR, very sharp, good contrast and color. It is a 72mm filter thread which I opted for a step up ring to use with my 70-200 as I often carry two bodies. I had the 24-120 which was not as sharp and heavier.
