Your 24-70 is a great lens. After using this set up for awhile it won't seem that heavy. One thing you definitely don't want to do is use inferior glass on a Nikon D850!

My travel lens is the 24-120 f/4 VR on my D750. It isn't nearly as heavy as the 24-70 but will still give you beautiful pics. Also invest in a great sling instead of a neck strap. A hip holster would also be a great "add" to help with off-setting the weight.

I have several lenses but go to is the Nikon 18-200 3.5-5.6.
Wide and long enough to be my traveler lens.

Just got my Nikon D850 plus two lenses...the Nikkor AF-S VR Micro 105 f/2.8 and the Nikkor lens AF-S 24 - 70 F/2.8E ED VR

Someone in the group said the 24 - 70 was a beast...she was right.

My questions is this...since it is rather heavy do I really need this lens to be my "go to" lens? Is there another lens that would also work?

I am an professional artist (painter) that loves to take images of her dogs and the Taos, NM countryside. (The Micro will be to take images of my work plus my students work.)

I have to say this group is not only realllllly wonderful but you are a hoot! I love this group of photographers and I trust your advice.

I wouldn't dare post an image of one of my photographs as you guys are way too good...maybe after I learn about the D850.

Your go-to or walk around lens will depend on you, your needs, and technique.

I've been shooting Nikon now for 4 years. My goto was 18-55. I just got the D7200 with an18-140 3.5-5.6, which I absolutely love. It stays on my 7200 pretty much all the time. I recently got the 35mm 1.8, which is super sharp and great in low light, and did not break the bank...it is my next favorite.... But both have different uses......

You have a great camera and lens combo. That 24-70 is good for what you say you shoot.... It is a good all around lens. You will get used to the weight, I did....

BTW,. Welcome to the hog..... Have fun shooting.

Welcome Abner!! I like my Tamron 28-75 f2.8. Constant f2.8 aperture, very sharp and light. It is a full frame lens that can also be used on DX cameras. $499 brand new. Try it at a camera shop to see how it performs with a D850.
