I had never heard of this, but apparently, hanging a pickle ornament on a Christmas tree is a tradition.

3 Theories
Here’s one theory: According to several sources, in the late 1880s, Woolworth stores began selling glass ornaments imported from Germany. These ornaments were made in the shapes of fruits and vegetables, including the pickle. Yet it’s unclear why the pickle became the tradition. It was green so it was hard to find on the tree? Maybe!

Another theory includes a soldier in the American Civil War. When the soldier was taken prisoner on Christmas Eve, he begged a guard for one last pickle before he died. The guard gave him a pickle and it gave him the strength he needed. When the soldier returned to his family, he started the tradition of hiding a pickle on the Christmas tree every year. Again, maybe.

A third theory includes two Spanish boys who were traveling home for the holidays from their boarding school. They stopped for the night at an inn where they were killed and their bodies were put in a pickle barrel. That evening, St. Nicholas stopped at the inn, found the boys in the barrel and brought them back to life. Yikes!

Jerry, this year people aren't putting pickles on their Christmas trees - they're putting pickleball paddles!

Why do drivers think they can drive away and escape the police? The police responded to a domestic abuse situation, and when they arrived, they saw the man in his car. He decided that he didn't want to be bothered dealing with the police, and he took off at high speed. The police soon stopped chasing him because of safety concerns. They had all of his information, and he was arrested the following day. A high-speed chase during the day through residential areas is never a good idea. Now, he has more serious charges against him. You have to wonder what was going through that guy's head. "There's no way those police cars can go 75 MPH. I'll just drive away and hide." Radio communication is faster than any car.

If you ever find yourself in this situation - and please don't - learn from this example. A friend of mine who had been drinking tried to outrun a police car. He weaved through a few country lanes, then pulled sharply off the road into a patch of bushes and just crouched there in his car. A few minutes later someone rapped on the window. There stood the driver of the police car, who said" "Sir, you almost made it but next time, when you stop, take your foot off the brake. I could see your brake-lights half a mile away."

The Bernoulli effect is why aircraft fly. The air passes faster over the curved upper wing surface, creating pressure lower than that on the lower wing surface.

I took a monopod and found it useful, but my beanbag resting on the side of the safari truck was more versatile.

Jerry, this is a fine example of lateral thinking. The man who invented the phrase, Edward De Bono, came up with something similar in Britain many years ago. Local calls from telephone booths were charged at a low fixed rate, and people were taking advantage of this by spending ages on the phone (this was in the days before mobile phones). The cost of converting every telephone booth in Britain to metered phones was considered prohibitive at the time, so De Bono was consulted. His idea, which was adopted with a huge cost saving, was to insert a weight into the handpiece. This made the phone heavy, discouraging long conversations. Same principle as the Slanty - make it uncomfortable for people to stay where you don't want them to stay!

I have the CS5 suite, and it won't run on my iMac with Monterey. Next week I'm having Sierra reinstalled as a second OS so I can run the programs. I subscribe to Adobe for PS and LR, but Sierra will allow me to run Indesign, which I was able to use until mid-last year, and which I need for book layouts, so for a once-only couple of hundred bucks I can save a second subscription to Adobe.

Most restaurants here in Australia won't give you a doggy bag in case you get ill - or -pretend to - and sue the restaurant. The world is not progressing for the better.

While my son's at work, I'm trying to get him signed in on the new Patient Portal at our doctor's. They want to send a verification code to his email. I tried to sign in to his email, but Gmail wants a verification code. I did that and entered it. Now, Google says I have to wait 48 hours so they can verify the account.

In the meantime, I'll trying to call the medical billing department to correct a billing error. All day, "the wait time is longer than normal." If it's always longer than normal, then that's normal.

Jerry, I'm guessing your son is short, so he will have to be a little patient(!)

The indentation at the bottom of a wine bottle is to collect the sediment. Wine bottles contain the full amount stipulated on the label (usually 750mm in our metric country). I speak from experience. I have opened - and emptied - many bottles in my lifetime.
