Hello Everyone,

We'll be travelling from Tangle Lakes, Alaska south to Valdez and then to Anchorage. Are there any specific photo locations or photo opps anyone can recommend? Our primary interests are landscapes and wildlife but we're not limited to those.

Thank you

So, I scanned my first batch of negatives. This is a 35mm frame on Tri-X. This was a train derailment in Kent, Ohio in the Spring of 1974. Scanned at 3200 dpi and brought back to life in Photoshop. Original was a bit underexposed and quite flat as the day was pretty overcast. It took several attempts before I figured out the process in VueScan, but, I'm pretty pleased with the result. Looks far better than any print I was ever able to make using the traditional wet process.

Note, I tried to upload the original file, but it wouldn't upload. I resized to a smaller size. Is there a maximum file size on UHH?

I have successfully used VueScan for several years. Canon (the worst of the lot) and others frequently cease to support a product in what I believe to be planned obsolescence. VueScan works seamlessly and is, in a word, awesome. And here's a bonus, other than a free trial run of the program. I have a Canon scanner made for a Mac and another made for a PC. I had the PC version at my office running Windows 7 at the time. I tried VueScan and the scanner worked perfectly on my "at home" Mac.

Yep, I've been using VueScan to run my no-longer-supported Fujitsu ScanSnap scanner. It works like a champ. I also have Silverfast which I use with An Epson V850 scanner and an old Nikon Slide scanner. Though the cost of the Silverfast Software is far higher than VueScan it does have a slightly higher capability for some types of scans. Certainly VueScan is a very good alternative and I believe it is buy once and upgrade forever at no additional cost piece of software.

If you buy the basic version (59.99), you get a year of free upgrades. The pro version (99.99) gets you free lifetime upgrades plus negative scanning capability.

Hello Hoggers,

I posted around 2 years ago whether it was worth dusting off my Canon 8400F scanner to try using with my Windows 10 computer and asked about programs like VueScan. As many of you are aware, Canon stopped supporting this scanner post-Windows 7 and there were no drivers available. As most of us on this forum are trending toward the old side, I expect no one to remember that post.

Fast forward to today. I have a scanning project coming up and figured I'd download the trial version of VueScan, dust off my 8400 (literally) and see what happens. I learned, when I logged onto the Hamrick website, that in the intervening 2 years they reverse-engineered a lot of old scanner drivers, including mine.

So, I downloaded, installed, and did a test scan. Wow! It was so fast and easy - much better than any prior scanning experience I've had. the resulting scan was very true to the original and I was quite pleased with the quality. Using their default settings, the scan was quite fast, too.

If any of you out there have been ruminating over whether to try VueScan to resurrect an old scanner, ruminate no more. This software is the real deal. I'm very pleased with the results and I couldn't get my credit card out of the wallet fast enough!

I hope my experience helps someone out there!

If you go to San Juan Island, off the coast of Washington (assuming you still go), there's a lighthouse (Lime Kiln Lighthouse) that has orcas that swim past pretty much every day.

Great and somber photos. Personally, I've always found the Korean War memorial to be quite haunting.

Argentina uses the European standard while Brazil uses the US standard (at least in Rio de Janeiro). Can't speak for Chile.

Sorry, anything that rates the NUT as real news is itself suspect.

So glad to see you're open to points of view that don't align with yours. Enjoy your life in Fantasyland.

If you are getting the "news" from the NY Times. WA Post and the LaTimes you are not getting the news. You are getting the party line, the Democratic Party Line. The Bias of those 3 sources is obvious. If you want a balanced look, go to Fox News to temper the obvious leftist main stream media. Fox should not be your only source either. But by going to both would give you a more balanced look.

Review of Fox News from MediaBiasFactCheck:

Fox News - Right Bias

These media sources are moderately to strongly biased toward conservative causes through story selection and/or political affiliation. They may utilize strong loaded words (wording that attempts to influence an audience by using appeal to emotion or stereotypes), publish misleading reports and omit reporting of information that may damage conservative causes. Some sources in this category may be untrustworthy. See all Right Bias sources.

Overall, we rate Fox News strongly Right-Biased due to wording and story selection that favors the right and Mixed factually based on poor sourcing and the spreading of conspiracy theories that later must be retracted after being widely shared.

Not exactly fair and balanced.
