Not a good idea to leave batteries in the camera all the time. Canon advises not to. A bad battery can fry the electronics if left in.

If the battery is left out for a prolonged period wont the camera lose its settings such date, time, etc?

I heard that the DX 11 has an internal silent focusing motor for use with certain Nikons.

It's a free country. Buy whatever floats your boat. Nobody is telling you what to buy, they are simply warning you not buy 3rd party lenses if you don't have to. The truth is, even the best lenses sometimes have problems. Another good think to do is read as many "reviews as possible. There are many people out there that are happy with 3rd party lenses, speedlites, grips, and batteries. Personally, I've had a lot of problems with 3rd party batteries and won't buy them any more. I bought a cheap flash cord and it fails 80% of the time, so I won't do that again. A friend of mine has the new Tamron 150-600 lens, and it won't focus track birds in flight. BIF is what he does but he's willing to keep the lens until the new Canon 7D Mk II comes out knowing that Tamron's lens will focus track with that body. I wouldn't!

We are not really discussing cheap cables and camera flashes here. We are talking about good quality optical equipment makers with processes and facilities that are close to rivaling the Big Three. Of course they are some who can afford the best and the greatest. And these folks will always deride everything else.

How do you like that Tokina 11-16mm? I have been seriously considering that for my 7D. I've read mostly rave reviews about this as a great Ultra Wide for Crop Sensor cameras. I keep hoping of a sale so I can say I got it for under $500!

I use the 11-16 with my Sony APSC cameras and am very pleased with the results. I am not a pixel peeper however and did not conduct any sharpness tests, etc. My results look good and my friends are happy. I don't know if your 7D is full frame or APSC. Results differ on full frame I hear.

Exactly. I have the Sigma 150-500, Tamron 18-200, the Tokina 11-16mm, Rokinon 85/1.4. Great lenses, cost $$$$$ less than getting the original name brand Sony lenses. I manage to get good images and am quite happy.

"You get what you pay for..." Hasn't this become clichéd? Posters keep saying this whenever discussions about 3rd party lenses come up. It might have held true as little as 5 years ago but now brands such as Tokina, Rokinon, Samyang and Sigma are producing excellent quality lenses. Some are so good as to give Canon, Nikon and Sony lenses a run for their money. Yet in spite of thousands of happy users some still persist in turning up their noses at "those 3rd party lenses for the poor photographer" !!

I have a Rokinon 500 mm reflector lens. I do NOT like it. The images are all very very soft. I am comfortable with manual focus etc. But I cannot get a really sharp high contrast image from it at all. If I wanted everything to look dreamy I'd fuzz it up in Photoshop. Build quality is nice, but so's my coffee cup and it does't take very good photos either.

The Rokinon 500mm lens is an entirely different animal from the Rokinon 85mm/1.4. The latter lens is excellent in construction and performance.

Hmmm.... That 16-300 would replace 3 of my lenses, with a bit wider on the low end to boot. Wonder when, and what cost. I guess my question would be how the quality (sharpness, CA, and the like) would compair with my current kit lenses? Too many questions, I guess, but to replace 3 lenses with just one, plus IS, sounds really attractive.

Available for preorder at $629.

I have the Sigma (Bigma) 50-500 lens. However, the case they sent with the lens is huge. I am a backpacker and sometimes I haul my camera gear up the sides of mountains. Any ideas for a smaller lens case that might work without taking up 2/3's of my backpack?

Thanks

Have a look at this. I got one. It makes it easy to carry the lens.
